Military Coup in Thailand

King heads new junta

Tanks on the street. The constitution revoked. Disgraced PM ousted.

Prime Minister Thaksin has been deposed in a coup staged by the army who are backing the King.

So, the PM looks like the usual corrupt PM according to the reports, and it seems that's what this trouble is about. Thailand also has a rebel Islamic insurgency in its 3 southern provinces that have killed about 1,500 people since the start of 2005.

My last few hours have focussed on street activity which forever a short time achieves one of my principle life goals :- switch off the telly! . The good people of Hungary are in their third day defying their government (but not state) during which they turned off the telly for more than 12 hours.
The Thai army have not only turned off the telly for 16 hours they've also stopped international telly coming in.

I'm chuffed.

So now we ought compare the two cases.

In neither has a single socialist worker poster appeared. The Hungarians "without specific agenda" switched off their telly by occupying the building in their hundreds & breaking a few windows & injuring some cops who then over-reacted with tear-gas, water cannon & generaly nastiness. The Thai have had as of yet no official police response, and their telly was switched off when tanks driven by Thai army parked outside. The men sitting in those tanks hold no rank higher than what you'd call a "corporal".

Other differences which pop to mind - are that the Hungarian army haven't expressed interest in whether or not they play a part any longer in prime ministers sociopathically lying & of course that Thailand is a constitutional monarchy just like Norway.

The very astute amongst you will remember I told you we will declare a republic of Norway when its constitutional monarchs are on holidays in Ireland. (c/f :-hungary http://indymedia.ie/article/78484 c/f our republic of Norway. http://indymedia.ie/article/78430 )

Finally I'd like to remind usual readers that I am one of the people who "call coups". Yes, it's great to do a coup when the PM is out of the country. But - it really helps if you figure out who has the most webcams & mobile phones first and which side the poliss really come down on.

constitutional monarchy & army & democracy & telly is fascinating isn't it?

I'm not going to call this a coup d'etat , & will probably be seen as unfashionable for it. The Thai people look forward to voting freely, in secret, with universal suffrage, with or without Jimmy Carter or EU observers, with or without inked thumbs or chads or electronic ballot machines an act which is central to our civilised values from Tehran to Riga. But at end this short period without TV or as it turned out internet access & boring military music on the radio proved Thailand is still really all about the King & I ; of course the army look more like Yul Brenner these days,

So we might turn our attention to closer to home. Why doesn't county Mayo have directly elected mayors?
Remembering the global significance of the phrase "yiz are a black pope" - why is it in our worldwide interest to make sure Joseph Ratzinger meets no nasty end? What do we have to do to stop him being an eejit martryr for the cause???

the man on the golden loo is the king of thailand. the army revoked senate, congress, constitution & telly. coz he's a constitutional monarch.

Coup leaders branded the dancing "totally inappropriate"

Thailand's coup leaders have banned go-go dancers from performing for troops on the streets of Bangkok, fearing soldiers may be distracted. A troupe of scantily-clad women danced for soldiers near the Royal Plaza on Monday, as part of entertainments paid for by a local radio station. But the coup's leaders - who had earlier told soldiers to keep smiling - have now banned all dancing near tanks.

"We have to maintain the seriousness of the coup," a military spokesman said.

Thai opera in 'bad luck' threats

A Thai composer has said the country's military-backed government has threatened to ban his opera. Somtow Sucharitkul said officials spoke to him days before the opening of Ayodhya, which is based on the epic poem Ramayana.

They were said to be concerned that portraying the death of demon-king Thotsakan on stage was taboo. The scene has been toned down following the complaints, he said, with the death now taking place off-stage.

The composer said officials told him that any misfortunes which befell those in power would be blamed on the opera.
