Violent attacks in Ballymena residents say IMC report “flawed and misleading”

category antrim | crime and justice | opinion/analysis author Tuesday October 10, 2006 01:01author by Pearse O Toole Report this post to the editors

Republican sources living in Ballymena believe IMC listed attacks wrongly attributed to dissident groups and wrongly categorized as military activity.

Ballymena Residents attribute some attacks to maverick Sinn Fein elements and loyalist/Unionist disharmony.

Residents and community representatives living in Ballymena’s North End has described the most recent International Monitoring Commission (IMC) report concerning their town as “flawed and misleading”.

Dunclug residents are questioning the motives and the veracity of IMC sources in their community and contrary to the published report they attribute violent attacks and robberies to “cohorts of North Antrim Sinn Fein and inter loyalist rivalry in Ballymena”.

One local man, who asked not to be identified described today’s (early morning) petrol bomb attack in the Dunclug area at the home and car of his protestant neighbour as “sectarian and sinister”. The petrol bomb attack occurred at about 1am.

The man said, “Some of those arrested near the scene are known Sinn Fein election workers.” Ends:
