The Hillsborough Law is well-intentioned, but its effect will be to transfer yet more power from Parliament to unelected judges ? the opposite of what is needed to restore public trust and democratic accountability.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's asylum 'crackdown' is not nearly enough to stop the flow, says Juliet Samuel in the Times. It still leaves Britain looking like a utopia for far too many.

Protest: Show Solidarity with Kurdish asylum seekers

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday November 09, 2006 14:45author by Cillian Gillespie - Socialist Party & Committee for a Workers Internationalauthor email cillian at socialistparty dot net Report this post to the editors

40 Kurdish asylum seekers are being threatened by the Cypriot government to be deported back to Syria- where they face imprisonment, torture and persecution by the authorities.

Protest is at 1pm at the Cypriot Embassy on Lesson Street.
COME TO THE PROTEST AND SHOW YOUR SOLIDARITY.

Kurdish people are the most persecuted and discriminated section of Syrian society. They are not allowed use their own language in public life and are often refused access to schools and universities. Any time Kurds in Syria have tried to campaign for their national rights they have been brutally suppressed by the Syrian regime.

Members of the Committee for a Workers International(CWI) in Cyprus have played a central role in giving support and assistance to the Kurdish asylum seekers. It is vital that as much political pressure is put on the Cypriot government in Cyprus and internationally to stop these deportations from taking place. In the next few weeks different sections of the CWI will be organising protests at various Cypriot Embassies throughout Europe. The Socialist Party and Socialist Youth is urging all our supporters and readers of the Socialist to send in letters of protest to the Cypriot government.

Send letters of protest to:
