A consortium of Shell, Statoil, and Marathon do a deal with the government allowing them exclusive exploitation rights to the Corrib gas field, off Mayo. Not only that, but they are allowed to write off their costs against taxes, meaning that the whole project is being funded by the PAYE taxpayer, who will receive nothing, not even lower gas prices. It may sound a bit iffy but there is no garda investigation into possible bribery or corruption. Jump To Comment: 1 2 3Ordinary Garda ranks follow orders and operational guidelines set down for them. Guidelines such as "go easy on the protestors" or "Give them a lesson and go in hard".
Their orders come from management that is appointed by politicians. This is a major flaw in Irish policing. The other major flaw is the absence of an independent authority to investigate the Gardai.
It politicians had no ability to appoint our police (and judges) and if the police (and judiciary) had an independent supervisory authority we would have a police force (and judiciary) we could respect.
I'm afraid, until then the present structures guarntee further scandals and perversions of justice.
There has been a number of reports that the Gardai have come on duty at Bellanaboy exhibiting signs of intoxication, not least evident, are alcohol fumes standing up close to a number of them. This would be a horrendous human rights abuse. There is serious need for immediate investigation as these reports are not only from locals but from visitors from abroad. It also affects the image of Shell at whose service the Gardai are redeployed. No doubt this situatuion will become important for the human rights committee of the Irish Government and its record of human rights during this protest both ar EU and UN levels where, on submitting its regular reports, it may have to answer complaints already on these desks.
Yeah, they sure know how to beat peaceful protesters up and start blocking them from attending a protest by setting up checkpoints before the Corrib site entrance. They are not accountable. They used to be but not now.
