Gardai brutality picket

category dublin | crime and justice | event notice author Monday May 07, 2007 17:40author by reabhloid dearg Report this post to the editors

The Republican Socialist Youth Movement have called for a picket of Store Street Gardaí station opposite Busáras in Dublin over the continued brutality of the Gardaí, not only in regards to Republican and Socialist activists, but against members of the community.

The Republican Socialist Youth Movement have called for a picket of Store Street Gardaí station opposite Busáras in Dublin over the continued brutality of the Gardaí, not only in regards to Republican and Socialist activists, but against members of the community.

In recent times, up to seven people have died in Gardaí custody or shortly after being released with one, Terrence Wheelock from Summer Hill being murdered in Store Street station. The state then instigated a cover up from the highest levels when they knew that their true image was to be exposed.

The picket is being held on this particular date as Tuesday June 5th will be the 10th anniversary of the summary execution of INLA Volunteer John Morris from Tallaght. Vol. Morris had already surrendered himself but was shot in the back of the head. The INLA later affirmed that John’s weapon was not loaded.

The picket will commence at 2 pm, Store Street Gardaí station, Saturday 2nd June.

All welcome.

Thankyou for the information about the picket.

Can I just clarify a few points: Did the INLA ever kill anyone who they knew to be unarmed?

Did the INLA ever accept the surrender of anyone?

In a war like the recent one in Ireland- were prisoners taken by either side?

Is it not somewhat wrong-headed to demand a different set of standards from one side than another in such a war- are you implying that the Free State should have had higher standards as regards prisoners than the INLA?

is the 2nd of june not the anniversary of terence wheelocks arrest and subsequent death?
as i understand it the family will be at store st holding a vigil on the anniversay of there relatives death in suspicious circumstances. they intend to leave flowers anually at the station.
methinks not very tactful to hold it that day....
might look like it is being hijacked.
what is your input on this situation?

It is indeed Jim. The date was chosen initially as I understand it is the closest Saturday to John Morris' 10th anniversary. We do, however, have contact with the Wheelock family. This picket will hopefully be as dignified as possible.

Hello there quick clarification

There will be a protest outside store street on the 9th June to mark the anniversary of the arrest that led to the death of Terence Wheelock. I will post more details when they are finalised. The IRSP protest on the second is on the anniversary itself but is not organised by the campaign. Fair play to anyone who is gives this case the attention it deserves

does it make sense to have to different pickets at store st garda station in the same week..
wont that split numbers.. can not the two campaigns come to gether in a show of solidarity .
regarding the deaths of these two young men in suspicious circumstances.
considering the author 's claim that he is in contact with the other campaign.
i agree the wheelock case is not geeting the scrutiny it deserves. best of luck to all.

City Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane told a preliminary hearing taking submissions from the Rossiter family and the State that she had written twice to the Hartnett Inquiry but had not received any reply.

The Hartnett Inquiry was set up in December 2005 to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the teenager who died in Cork University Hospital, two days after falling unconscious while in garda custody in Clonmel in September 2002.

She adjourned the inquest for mention until 26 July next.
