Outrage for freedom of speech in Universities

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Saturday May 19, 2007 14:25author by Sal Fioreauthor email contact at salvatorefiore dot com Report this post to the editors

Increasing spying over academics sparks protest and anger across academia.

The recent sacking of a university lecturer in Wolverhampton, UK, has sparked impassioned and articulate protest from international associations for freedom of speech.

Sal Fiore, who has been absent from work for several months due to stress, was dismissed without notice. Due to his illness, he was not present at the 35 minute disciplinary hearing held by the University of Wolverhampton on 23 April.

Within recent months Mr Fiore had confided to members of a Yahoo discussion group for Bullied Academics that he was being persecuted for having expressed criticisms towards managers within the School of Computing and IT at the University of Wolverhampton, where he taught and researched prior to his dismissal.

His critiques extended to the conduct of marketing policies ad the equitable promotion of research within the University. Reference was also made to the ‘very close’ relationship between the UCU Union and the School Management.

The news of the dismissal and critique regarding limitations to freedom of speech has been released by the Times Higher Education Supplement this week. http://www.thes.co.uk/current_edition/story.aspx?story_...36693

Sal Fiore is publishing a series of stories “Pack of Wolves” in which he is revealing all the events he had to endure whilst at the University of Wolverhampton for pro-bono publico. With the stories he hopes to highlight the oppressive workplace bulliyng within UK Universities.
