The banner rent from side to side

category national | worker & community struggles and protests | other press author Friday August 03, 2007 01:36author by John McAnulty - Socialist Democracy Report this post to the editors

In June this year the socialist unity magazine ‘Red Banner’ split, with the ‘Editorial board’ announcing that the magazine was ceasing publication and a new publication was planned, and an ‘Editorial collective’ announcing that publication will continue.

It was the worst of all splits, with allegations and name-calling but without the slightest hint of the political disagreement that all such divisions are inevitably based on. It appears that the participants are determined to learn nothing from their experience and that they have nothing to tell the socialist movement at large that would enable us to develop and learn from their experiment.

Another rambling article packed with misinformation and outright lies - the usual crap we've come to expect from Socialist Democracy. More proof, as if it were needed, of why SD are completely irrelevant and will never be able to point to a single worthwhile thing that they've achieved. Useful only as a parody of the worst habits of far-left sects - a sort of "there but for the grace of god go I" wake up for any over-zealous socialist. In that sense we owe them a real debt.

I simply dispair at this constant "Groundhog day" loop of splits and factions and new grouping and so on and so on!!
I´ll admit I haven´t even the energy to read into what this split is about, but it simply goes to prove that socialialist politics doesn´t stand a chance of going anywhere as long as everybody continues with this "I´m a real socialist and it´s my way or no way" attitude.
Maybe there are certain ideals that can´t be comprimised on, but we have to live in the real world and at least make a genuine effort at left unity.

This sectarian micro-grouplet - Socialist Democracy - never ceases to amuse me. For some inexpliciable reason, they seem to consider themselves the font of all wisdom on the doings of the Irish left. Unfortunately, there opinions are rarely backed up by knowledge of what's happening or has happened. This nonsense about Red Banner is a case in point.

It's drawing conclusions from nothing more than speculation about what did or didn't happen. John, is there any chance you'd just mind your own business? I mean, one micro-grouplet 'analyses' (read 'engages in polemic and negative attack') another. Yawn!
