Court cleared in Belmullet

category mayo | environment | news report author Wednesday September 12, 2007 11:15author by Jonah Report this post to the editors

Belmullet Court update

Just to let people know a bit of controversy in Belmullet this morning where ten Shell to Sea activists and supporters are up on various charges.

A member of the public entered the courtroom carrying a camera and the judge has cleared the courtroom. It's unclear who the person with the camera is/was but the court has ground to a halt while it is sorted out.

The judge insisted that people be searched (presumably for recording equipment) prior to proceedings taking place.

She dismissed a legal application that she disqualify herself as there's an obvious conflict of interest (Fianna Fáil connections, surprise surprise...).

She went on to launch a hissy broadside against Indymedia and what she called 'hate mail'. It seems that some person/s unknown have been sending her posts which question her suitability to hear cases relating to the Corrib giveaway and the extra legal activities of Shell's cops. As if Indy wasn't her homepage...

One of John Monaghan's cases has been deferred and the remainder are up this afternoon after video evidence has been examined.

More news as it happens (well, almost).

... has a problem with anything published on indymedia, tell her to "take it to the list".
I'm sure there is nothing on the newswire that she has any reasonable cause to complain about. Emphasis here is of course on the word 'reasonable'.

I've carried my camera into court several times. Who would leave it outside?
Was the person pointing it at anyone? Was the lens cap off?
Or is this judge just a bit of a control freak? Or just a bit ashamed at the thought that people will be reading about the role of the judge in the whole farce that passes for Justice in the Shell Corrib Project?

If the judge has become a fan of Indy, she must be quite familar with all the garda brutality spoken of and links to videos of same.

Shame on you madam, that you witness this and allow it to continue.

Looking forward to reading a fuller and more detailed account of what went on in 'class' today.

Please don't spare the details. For those of us who weren't there, we wait with baited breath for a full Indymedia account. And we're not going to get it anywhere else.

More, more!

Shramore 5 'lock on' people's case is to be heard tomorrow as there was not enough time today.

Hopefully someone else can provide more details

Good news on Tadhg - was it a technicality or what happened?

Judge dismissed the case because she implied that she was not convinced of the garda evidence. It was inconsistent and didn't fit in with the video. 2 hours of it and they couldn't put a case together. Must try harder.

Well done on having the charges cleared, a victory for the campaign.
See you all at the road tomorrow!
