This decision instigated by Socialist Party’s Cllr Clare Daly is the first of its kind in this country. It will mean that ‘wild’ animals will not be allowed perform in Circuses in the Fingal area.We congratulate all of the Council for making the unanimous compassionate decision which is the first of its kind in Ireland. It has been reported this morning that wild animal performances in Circuses within lands owned by Fingal County Council have been banned. This is not the case. The motion below was referred by the full council to the Community, Recreation & Amenity Strategic Policy Committee for further consideration. The SPC is made up of Councillors, Fingal County Council staff and community activists.
It was further agreed to allow broad discussion on the matter involving representatives of Circuses in Ireland and that any ban would encompass all of Fingal, rather than just state owned land. It is most likely that any policy emanating from Fingal will take months to come into force and will only be completed following thorough debate and agreement from the full council.
Reports of an outright ban are premature and factually incorrect.
The debate can be viewed at http://www.fingalcoco.public-i.tv/site/
“That Fingal County Council support the introduction of by-laws or other measures which would ensure that circuses which use wild animals are prohibited from performing in any part of the local authority area, in light of the well-documented evidence of suffering endured by the animals involved and the serious animal welfare issues raised.” (The motion was amended to include the word wild & the deletion of the final line of the original motion.)
