Student Grants Protest outside Dáil

category dublin | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday October 24, 2007 16:59author by Jim Report this post to the editors

Up to one hundred students yesterday protested outside the Dáil over inadequate grants and their late payment.

It was a far cry from the demonstrations in 2001 and 2002 when over 20,000 students took to the streets across Ireland to demand an increase in the grant to cover the cost of living. Nonetheless given the inertia of the student movement over the last few years it was a welcome step forward. Most of the students came from Trinity and UCD with some members of Labour Youth and Ogra Sinn Fein present.

The speakers included Ruairi Quinn T.D. who was part of the Labour government that abolished tution fees, Pearse Doherty of Sinn Fein and Independent Senator David Norris. Pearse Doherty spoke of how when he was in college in DIT he shared a room with four other people due to exhorbitant rents and poor student financial support.

Proposed pay rise for Taoiseach announced today
25/10/2007 - 09:16:33

Details of a proposed pay rise for the Taoiseach will be announced today.

The Review Body on Higher Remuneration is also expected to announce pay increases for ministers, judges and senior civil and public servants.

The review body on top-level remuneration has been examining the pay scales of Ministers, senior civil servants, senior Garda and Army officers as well as top staff in local authorities and in the health service for the last year

However, according to reports in this morning's newspapers, it will also recommend that some groups should get no increase at all and in some cases rises should be reduced significantly to take account of the value of public sector pensions.

Bertie Ahern earns €260,000 a year while ministers are paid just over €200,000.

WHAT KIND OF A F**KING JOKE OF A SYSTEM ARE WE LIVING IN!
WHAT ABOUT PAY INCREASES FOR HEALTH AND EDUCATION
NAY HARNEYS FAT ARSE AND BERTIES BANK ACCOUNTS ARE MORE PRESSING ISSUES AT THE MOMENT! C**NTS!

Nice protest, see you same time next year then to protest over the same issue? USI has a membership of alledgedly 250,000 members yet never seeks in engage them in any form of sustained grassroots campaign. It's no wonder these one-off protests every year fail to accomplish anything.
