Three DVD showings Sat 10th November

Tralee Anti-War Group presents

An Afternoon of DVDs showings including

"Route Irish"
Route Irish is a NEW feature-length film on the campaigns against
Irish facilitation of the US/UK Invasion of Iraq.

In the words of editor Eamonn Crudden, "Route Irish" "is firstly a vérite
documentation of the emergence between 2002 and 2004 of a broad
popular opposition to the US military use of Shannon Airport in the buildup to,
invasion of and occupation of Iraq.

It follows a loose network of politicians, activist groups and
individuals through the story of the rise, fracturing and sudden
decline and disappearance of this movement and retraces the way in
which their combined efforts, energies and strategies served to
effectively tear away the Irish State's veneer of Neutrality and
non-alignment in the post September 11th era of the 'War on Terror'.

It has, because of the progress of political events in Ireland, become
a strange and surreal portrait of the Green Party pre their elevation
to government."

also showing:
"The Israeli Wall"
Two American activists/film-makers set out to explore the impact of
The Wall on Palestinian lives.

"Control Room"
Control Room is a 2004 documentary about the invasion of Iraq and Al
Jazeera TV and the other news organizations that covered it.

Showings start at 3PM
VENUE: Grand Hotel Tralee, Saturday 10th November

The sting of dispassionate criticism
'Route Irish' made me reflect on my involvement

I was at the first protest that the film shows at Shannon on the 15 Dec 2001
Seeing the US soldiers did feel like a "hallucination"
At that event I also remember the exhiliration ("go on y crazy fucker") of seeing a protester inside the perimeter fence legging it torwards the World airlines carrier...

On a critical note:
Later in the film the voiceover claims that the Shannon Peace Camp was "initiated by some veterans of Greenham Common"

I thought that it was initiated at the 'Grassroots Gathering' held in Cork in 2002?

Helping to push (yes, you have to push) the idea came in part came from a book by Rebecca Solnit on the topic of the Nevada Test Site in the US.

(I don't want to lead into an argument about the pros and cons of the Peace Camp)
The main reason I think this is worth mentioning
is that if the film aims to renew anti-war activity
then to aid that work, an accurate account of where and how previous ideas/tactics 'got up and running' is useful.

It leads to the question
where in Ireland is there that fertile space
to push new ideas/tactics now?
