The first ever Cork Cycling Arts Festival gets into gear from Monday 21st to Sunday 27th July 2008 with a fantastic range of free events celebrating the bicycle culture in the city. The festival’s imaginative programme features art exhibition, film nights, cycling tours, workshops and a family cycling picnic.

The first ever Cork Cycling Arts Festival gets into gear from Monday 21st to Sunday 27th July with a fantastic range of free events celebrating bicycle culture in the city. The festival will have arts and entertainment at its heart with a special focus on family-friendly events. Cycling is fast, trendy, planet-friendly, and healthy - a means of transport as well as a hobby.Cork Cycling Arts Festival will be a fun and energetic event, with a positive environmental message, a healthy lifestyle choice and a free and youthful outlook.

The festival’s imaginative programme features art, film nights, cycling tours, workshops and a cycling picnic.Highlights include:

• Cycling Advocacy Meeting – This public meeting will open Cork Cycling Arts Festival and will offer a two-hour session of talks by local and international speakers followed by a public debate. O’Rahilly Building, UCC, Room 212.

• The Sense of Cycling, an interactive arts exhibition will be installed in the Princes’ Street Unitarian Church throughout the festival where artists and performers will explore all sides of the cycling experience – from exhilaration to vulnerability.

• Red Singing Bikes will be presented by Cork Community Bikes who will prepare bikes to perform Willem Raes’ Second Symphony written in 1976 – cyclists who wish to take part in this exciting performance are invited to meet at 6pm in Daunt Square on Wednesday 23rd July.

• 3 participatory bike rides - a Guided Bike Tour of Cork City, the Critical Mass Bike Ride and a slightly more challenging cycle led by Cork-Kerry An Óige.

• 3 Film Nights: Chain Reaction (Documentaries), Bicyclicious (Art short films) and Cyclinematic Masterpiece (classic cycling films)

• A Cycling Picnic at the Atlantic Pond on Sunday 27th with an escorted ride there at 12 noon from Emmet Place returning at 6pm.

• 3 cycling workshops on Saturday 26th – Pimp my Bike! With sculptor Rob Ireson, Fix your Puncture and a creative Cycling Stickers workshop.

The festival will close with a party at the Franciscan Well Brewery, North Mall from 6pm on Sunday 27th July.

The festival is supported by Cork City Council, “Trendy Travel” European project, Intelligent Energy Europe programme and various local sponsors Milano’s restaurant and GoCar Ireland.

Cork Cycling Arts Festival is proposed by Cork Community Bikes, Cork Cycling Campaign, An Óige, Cork City Council, University College Cork, Cork Film Centre, Mahon Community Centre, Mayfield Arts Community Centre and many other local organisations.
