Green Team spread the word at the Electric Picnic

activists handed out nuts to advertise elections

Natural Resources Minister Eamon Ryan joined the Green Team, a group of Green Party activists at the Electric Picnic recently to hand out postcards advertising the party.

They also gave thousands of nuts to raise awareness about the upcoming local and European elections.

The Green Team hope people will plant the nuts to grow hazel trees, which it is hoped will help mitigate the effects of the earth warming up through fossil fuel use and the severe changes that will inevitably ensue.

Some critics of the Green Party in Ireland have found it difficult to take seriously the party's statements of concern about climate change while they are part of a government which is overseeing the construction of a large motorway in Meath, airport expansion in Dublin, a huge natural gas refinery in Mayo, and many other projects around the country which will have a negative effect on Ireland's carbon footprint.

Nevertheless, the Minister for Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan of the Green Party, is on record as saying that climate change is the most serious issue the country has ever had to deal with in its history.

Tara Campaigners at the Electric Picnic:

Tara Campaigners presented their display Inside the Paddy Mirage, a wonderful recreation of Newgrange Passage Tomb at the Electric Picnic last weekend. Inside, The Wall of Truth was illustrated with images of the archaeology dug up along the path of the M3 Double Toll Road and various Campaign Info was available and distributed to raise awareness of the ongoing situation.

Musicians and performers from the Save Tara album 'The Mighty Gather In' entertained the crowds on Saturday. The Walls did a secret gig in the Mirage that afternoon followed by a talk on the Meath Master Plan ( transport solution to the Tara/M3 disaster ) by one of its co creators Brian Guckian. See www.meathmasterplan.com

We even had the pleasure of the company of John Vaughan a Seanachai from Co. Tipperary who mesmerised the crowd with his amazing tales.

Over 2000 signatures for the Reburials Petition were collected over the weekend . Details at www. tarapixie.net

We would like to thank everyone who showed their support especially all those who signed the petition or donated their ears or their coffers. Our special thanks to all the artists, performers and the Paddy Mirage Crew who made the weekend a huge success.

Finally, a big thank you to Mr David Best the artist behind the 'Temple of Truth' which was burned in aid of 'Suicide Ireland' on the Sunday night.

See you all at Samhain,
Tara Campaigners.

Ps: The Vigil camp is still at Belper Farm and welcoming visitors at the Longhouse.

To follow on from Erris's post people may be interested to know that members of Cork CC have proposed a no confindence motion in John Gormley over he's continuing inept handling of the Hawboline toxic dump site. Despite empty promises from his Dept nothing has been done over the summer to clean up or even secure the site and with autumn/winter coming down the tracks this will make any ameliration much harder.

Personally I think Gormley has performed better than Ryan since the GP joined government - Which is saying something!!!!!!!

Anyone else see the similarity between the massive Green canvassing machine present at the EP (Ryan, Sargent, staffers and various hangers-on) and the Fianna Fail operation every year at the Galway Races?

The GP must be really running scared to put those sort of re-use conditions on the photo.

What sort of speech bubbles (for instance) are they worried about being added to it. "I must be nuts to think I can get away with this sort of greenwash when I'm a minister in a government that's deploying the Irish Navy against environmental protesters at Rossport" for instance.

author by Rubberduckypublication date Mon Sep 08, 2008 10:49author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Gormley and his Greens walked the land with the people of Rossport prior to the elections and promised they would stop the work there and preserve the area if they were elected into Govt. You know the rest!

You're havin a laugh! Nuts is right- and they aint Hazel, quite appropriate to represent the party themselves. I do hope he was confronted on his partie's loony policies already mentioned above. I know there was a strong Tara contingent there- would be nice to hear from them!
