Protest against education cuts

category cork | miscellaneous | event notice author Thursday November 27, 2008 18:35author by modonoghue - People Before Profit Report this post to the editors

Protest against education cuts: Green Party Office (Dan Boyles Clinic)

Cork People before Profit Alliance is inviting the public to participate in a series of protests over the coming weeks. The first of these pickets will be held on Green Party Office (Dan Boyles Clinic), 99 Douglas Street, Cork on Saturday 29 November 12pm.

The People before Profit Alliance condemn the recent education cutbacks. Its spokesperson Mala ODonoghue said “Teachers and parents are rightly outraged at the education cuts announced by the government. These cuts will be felt across the system but particularly by those who are disadvantaged.”

Both Fianna Fail and the Greens gave clear commitments to reduce class sizes and improve the pupil teacher ratio. Their failure to honour this commitment stands in stark contrast to the willingness to bail out the banks. "Batt O Keefee should hang his head in shame at the fact that our children are in the most over-crowded classes in Europe" .

Speaking in advance of the picket Mala ODonoghue said “Last Saturday we met with many parents, teachers and students, all who wanted to continue a campaign and stay on the streets until the cutbacks are reversed. We intend to do this”.

“This is the first in a series of protests which will target Cork Government Public Representatives, to show them the level of opposition that exists to the cuts, and our determination to have them reversed. I would encourage people from across the city to come out on Saturday and show the Green Party and Fianna Fail that the people of Cork will not stand down on this”.

Well done to PBP for organising this. We need many more of these around the country. Good luck with it, I hope you get another 30,000+ at each and every demonstration.

Mark.

Last night there were up to 100 people at a bilingual meeting in Ionad Pádraig, Dobhar, a community centre in the Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht. The principal of the local secondary school, Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair, a rep from INTO and Simon Mac Giolla Easbaig (16) from Comhairle na nÓg, spoke about the implications of the cuts on the education of our young people. There was a call for a huge turn-out at the protest in Donegal Town tomorrow, leaving the District Hospital at 1.45pm and for people to get to Dublin for the 6 December demo. After the meeting, people spontaneously started to organise a petition and phone calls to local elected representatives to put pressure on them over the cuts. A very good crowd and a great meeting. Good omen for the march tomorrow!
