40 protest at Greek Embassy as part of international day of action

category dublin | anti-capitalism | news report author Saturday December 20, 2008 19:24author by Andrew Report this post to the editors

Some 40 people took part this lunchtime in the march from the top of Grafton street to the Greek embassy as part of the International Day of Resistance and Solidarity. Leaflets proclaiming that ;Our lives do not belong to the state' were distributed and the banners unfurled. On arrival at the Greek embassy we observed that the frontage had been splattered with red paint and at least one window had been broken sometime previously. A greek comrade gave a short speech on what was happening in Greece and the we dispersed
img_3485.jpg

Reports are now coming in of similar protests and actions taking place all over the world as thousands continue to demonstrate and occupy buildings in Greece. The call-out for the Dublin demonstration observed ..

Whilst this demos was been called in solidarity with the popular up rising in Greece, in the context of cops killing an 15 yeare old boy, by shooting him at point blank range in the chest, it should be remembers that many families in Ireland have had to deal with deaths of their children is less than clear circumstances

It should also be obvious that many deaths wiill result form the service cutbacks no proposed by our government. These clearly are a capitalist attack on ordinary people, as global capitalist seek to prop up a global finacial system which has injustice and inequality as one of its core principles

We will not forget this, nor will we forget that the police forces of the state have, as a primary concern, the continuation of the status quo, at all cost. One need only look to Rossport, or the disgusting treatment at the hands of the Guards, to families looking clear and honest answers, and justice, for the death of their loved ones, that in many circumstances, at the very least deserve full and independant public inquiries

This is a list of deaths in Guards custody since 1997 to march 2006 Derek Lehane, aged 19, was taken by ambulance to hospital from Midleton Garda station, Cork in January 1997.

He was pronounced dead in hospital the same day. An inquest gave a verdict of accidental death arising from the ingestion of a controlled drug.

In December 1997, Norman McGrath, aged 48, from Ballyfermot collapsed in Pearse St Garda station and was pronounced dead at hospital. A post mortem found he had had a heart attack.

In January 1998, David O'Connor, aged 34, died at Wexford Garda Station.

Peter Williams, aged 33, from Thurles, collapsed in Kilmainham Garda Station in Dublin on 7 September 1998 and died in hospital. The inquest held that his was death by misadventure arising from the ingestion of prescribed drugs.

On 18 September 1998, Francis Brooks, aged 23, of Rathfarnham, was found dead in Tallaght Garda Station.

On 26 May 1999, Martin Hickey was found dead from strangulation at Trim Station.

On 22 August 1999, a 52 year old man died in Rathmines Garda Station. The Inquest recorded a verdict of death by misadventure, due to vomit inhalation as a result of acute alcohol intake.

On May 10 2000, Derek Cooper from Southill, Limerick was found hanging in a cell in Roxboro Garda station. he had been arrested inder the public order act.

In October 2000, Walter Kells, aged 26, was found collapsed in Drogheda Garda station and later pronounced dead. He had been arrested for an alleged breach of the peace.

On 4 June 2001, an unnamed man was found dead in Store Street Garda station.

On 13 September 2001, Thomas Mongan, from Westside, Galway, died in hospital shortly after having been arrested.

On 3 May 2001, Patrick Hayes hung himself in a cell at Dungarvan Garda station, Waterford. He had been arrested under Section 17 of the Domestic Violence Act 1996 following an alleged incident involving his former partner.

In December 2002, 19-year-old Paul Magee died in hospital after being found unconscious in Kilmainham Garda Station. A postmortem concluded his death was consistent with cocaine-related collapse

On 12 September 2002, Brian Rossiter was found unconscious in Clonmel Garda station, and died later in hospital.

On 17 June 2003, an unnamed man died in custody in Tallaght Garda station.

On 21 December 2003, John Delaney died in Kilkenny Garda station.

On 3 January 2004, William Haugh, aged 48, from Donaghmede, Dublin died in Clontarf Garda station.

On 13 January 2004, Peter Skelly, aged 25, died in Youghal Garda station.

Also in January 2004, Thomas Campion, aged 23, died in Store Street Garda station.

On 2 June 2005, Terence Wheelock was arrested and brought to Store Street Garda station, and later died in hospital.

We left a picture of Alex at the door. I'm sure the Gardai who weren't far away watching us quickly removed them. It was a good protest in general though. I'm sure there will plenty of stories coming from mainland Europe.

RECENT TEXT:

FUCK! Peaceful BCN demo in soidarity with greek revolt just got smashed up v bad by cops
, think some people hospitalised, everyone hit a lot. Scary. Scary!

oi oi oi
As ye did yer thing in dublin, we in BCN did our thing, but, perhaps, with a lickle difference...cops in BCN(barcelona) lost the rag and attacked peaceful demo full on tonight!!
and i mean fucking FULL ON!!!

everyone was battered, most a bit, some severly, a few are in hospital!!

As demos and general actions go, as a friend pointed out: "Fucking Hell, the cops (Los Mossos, the "autonomous police force for the province of ""Catalunya"" ) here are fucking cunts, with no reason they just beat the fuck out of everyone, its fucking horrible that they can do this and get away with this"
response, mas o menus (more or less)!
YEPP! I hear ya bucko, you ok? after taking that smack in the back for nothing... (this what happens the whole time, its not for nothing that 4 cops were found guilty of torture last week in catalunya)..., anyways...
greece kicked off due to, amongst other reasons..., cops being cunts...
the same happens in ireland (remember rossiter, wheelock and any of the kids taken up foley st, for a hidingl...) difference is, the irish (after getting such a deadly name as agro cunts) now do nothing about the shit that goes on.....

tontight in BCN the cops were way out of line, i expect that the general public will openly and quickly come out against cop/state (spanish/ catalan) violence, i hope so, i expect so. you remember this is the "state" or "area" where last year the cops used kubotans, same weekend as punching the fuck out of polish chick in custody, same weeked as killing african dude by throwing him out of high speed car, that people feel "theres something not right with the police force"

so, what comes of this???
firstly, if you have a tuned in aware population that take action against injustice (ie, how democracy is supposed to work...) there will be demos on the streets here soon,
if not, well (in these days) capitalism and consumerism has won: "we dont care, OR, its too dangerous to do anything about it.."
OR
We believe we can win, we realise the limits (and boredom) of their system and say no - fuck you - I want to live - We want to live - and with that, simply, carry on building those sensible systems we believe in.....

anyway wont go on, just a note to say, ta, irlanda: there on the "wee" island; so little support, so little understanding, a place of such beauty, a place of such peer pressure enforced cynicicm... "Is it for this the sons of Roísin died?? (still, more or less, 1 a week is jumping of the cliffs of moher...)

here we are being battered
and it fucking hurts...
there (in ireland) with the legendry name, fuck all changes,,,
solidarity with greece, and those who took action today in dublin, and our PRECIOUS world

Seriously - what do people think of this turnout? In a city of one million people, where the Greek situation has been in the papers, internet and TV for a fortnight, and there's been several hundred out on non-vampire demos in the past... I think I got a dozen emails about this demo on different lists saying the same thing from three or four different people, and a lot of organising (or organisinig, har har) went into it, yet only a bare handful of people come out onto the street for it? I know its good to have a public face of solidarity, and its nice to add Dublin to the list of cities of places where actions have taken place too, but a lot more people would have read about this on boards, lists, and indymedia in the run up to it... and just werent bothered. Its a bit disheartening when something as serious as a death at the hands of the police who are meant to be protecting the people doesnt rouse people from their apathy.

Good to see some action in Dublin, was there anywhere else in Ireland that a demo happened?

Somewhat agree with above poster, why are more not out, surely things have changed quite quickly in ireland, now the tiger has ran away. I was wondering on other IMC-IE thread about whether there is any connections happening between greece stuff, general anti-capitalist communitys in ireland and the student movement, which, for a while, seemed to be building up in strength and boldness. In new york a few days back the students occupied NEW SCHOOL university, solidarity was expressed with greece and other university occupations around europe (nearly all BCN unis are now student occupied, its quite something to walk through them...) What might it take for this to happen in Ireland, do people feel its necassary in regard to supposed education tax cuts, or, is there a deeper story to explore and build from???

more on that here:

Sunday nights La Vanguardia again was asking, this time with 4 page centre paper spread, like many other papers here in BCN and beyond, whether there is not more to this than meets the eye, and whether, as Sarkozy recently stated: how this "thing" might be spreading around Europe, and indeed, beyond...And if that is the case, how and why, and what it might lead to...

Violencia policial gratuita contra las manifestaciones del 20D (Free / open police violence against the protests of 20 December)

the day of solidarity actions with the greek protests finished in barcelona with the beatings from Catalan cops of the protestors. One Mosso (Catalan cop) fell to the ground and this provoked laughing and singing. The cops responded accordingly and started provoking hard all the demo, and finally attacked, with no excuse, against all who they came across: protestors, passers by, people whod gone out to buy christmas prezzies, journalists.

People Start Revolting In Iceland: Summary Of Action News In English
could this be Ireland soon, if the crisis deepens???

- from Greece to Iceland and around the planet our hearts are burning -

Things are more and more fucked here in Iceland. Iceland's three main banks have been nationalised and the tax payer now has to pay off the loans. The country is broke and the IMF have been called in and have imposed their usual austerity measures. Unemployment is growing rapidly along with the threat of people losing their homes. Alongside this the population is growing increasingly angry.
