Rishi Sunak has once again been dropping hints about leaving the European Convention on Human Rights. This is not credible, says Dr David McGrogan: such a feat would require a Government far more serious than this one.

It's been a wet winter and this is bad news for farmers, says Ben Pile. But with agricultural yields increasing sharply over recent decades, there's no reason to link it to climate change or start catostrophising about it.

Galway: The "Filthy Nine" peddling Israeli goods picketed, and told to clean up their act yesterday

category galway | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Sunday January 18, 2009 16:32author by TD - Free Palestine Campaign Report this post to the editors

To encourage people of good conscience to boycott Israeli goods and produce, yesterday, activists and supporters of the Free Palestine Campaign picketed nine of unethical companies profiteering from their sale of Israeli foodstuffs, goods and support of Zionism, distributed information leaflets, garnering warm public support and severly embarrassing the Filthy Nine in the process.
flyingpicket1.jpg

Within an easy walk of each other, the geographical siting of the eight retail stores and one fast food eatery; McShite’s, facilitated a flying picket - further out, more profiteering outfits such as B&Q in the Galway West Retail Park, Atantic Homecare in the Wellpark Business park and Supervalue in Fr. Griffin Road will be graced and then shamed with our flying picket once transport becomes available; Grafton Group plc, through its Atlantic Homecare and Woodies DIY outlets, is one of the largest stockists in Ireland of goods manufactured in Israel. Dead Sea cosmetics, besides the Israelis peddling these products outside the entrance to Penneys Store in the Eyre Square Shopping Center, Galway are promoted and sold in Debenhams. http://www.ipsc.ie/campaigns_graftongroup.php

Contrary to recent mischief making that Lidl and Aldi were sending their revenues to Israel, along with other supermarkets Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Dunnes Stores, Supervalue, etc, they stock fruit and vegetables stolen from the Palestinian occupied territories which are exported under the Israeli label Carmel Agrexco.

There is no photo posted of the picket outside Aldi’s in the Galway Retail Park, Headford Road, as we suspended the picket when, through a security person, they informed us that the offending Israeli produce had been removed for sale and they did not intend to restock it – unfortunately, we couldn’t verify, on the face of it, this commendable act of conscience afterwards, as courtesy of the fierce storm that battered the streets, we were all water logged and a change of clothing was a more pressing concern.

It is not just “Anti-Semitic” groups (as the Zionists, pathetically, mindlessly tag them), that are calling for boycott/sanctions or at least selective sanctions of Apartheid Israel but a plethora of Jewish groups worldwide such as the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) “a multi-tiered campaign of sanctions against Israel until the Occupation ends" (Jeff Halper, An Israeli in Palestine), the US based Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), European Jews for a Just Peace (a coalition of 16 Jewish groups from eight European countries), New Profile (Israel), Not in My Name (US), Matzpun (Israel/International), Jews Against the Occupation (NYC chapter), The petition of South African government minister Ronnie Kasrils and legislator Max Ozinski, which has gathered more than 500 signatories from South African Jews, Jewish Voices Against the Occupation, Jewish Women for Justice in Israel and Palestine (US), Gush Shalom, Jews for Global Justice (US), Visions of Peace With Justice (US), among others, Neturei Karta.

Thanks to all who demonstrated in the cold, & who boycotted Israeli goods. I've found some (smooth, green) avocados from the Dominican Republic, which are huge and delicious, excellent value.

... Surrendering them verges on active complicity ... Since 2006 Israel has been steadily escalating its criminality: expanding settlements, launching an outrageous war against Lebanon and imposing collective punishment on Gaza through the brutal blockade. Despite this escalation, Israel has not faced punitive measures--quite the opposite. The weapons and $3 billion in annual aid that the US sends to Israel is only the beginning. Throughout this key period, Israel has enjoyed a dramatic improvement in its diplomatic, cultural and trade relations with a variety of other allies. For instance, in 2007 Israel became the first non-Latin American country to sign a free-trade deal with Mercosur. In the first nine months of 2008, Israeli exports to Canada went up 45 percent. A new trade deal with the European Union is set to double Israel's exports of processed food. And on December 8, European ministers "upgraded" the EU-Israel Association Agreement, a reward long sought by Jerusalem ... The relevance of the South African model is that it proves that BDS (Boycott, Disinvestment Sanctions) tactics can be effective when weaker measures (protests, petitions, back-room lobbying) have failed. And there are indeed deeply distressing echoes: the color-coded IDs and travel permits, the bulldozed homes and forced displacement, the settler-only roads. Ronnie Kasrils, a prominent South African politician, said that the architecture of segregation that he saw in the West Bank and Gaza in 2007 was "infinitely worse than apartheid."

It is shocking that the elected powers that be stood idly by while israel murdered innocent civilians who are caged in Gaza, in an effort to wipe out as much as possible the palistinian race. What was done to the Jews by the Nazis was wrong but yet they are repeating the genocide of the palistinian people. The palistinians deserve a share of their homeland which was wrongly taken from them by the allied forces- usa for the israelis after ww2. For the slaughter of the innocent children no justification can ever be given by isreal or should ever be accepted.
