Jump To Comment: 1One division in Irish society at the moment is between those who have jobs and those who don't. Another divide is between those who have permanent pensionable jobs and those who have other, insecure jobs. Another division is between the employed and the unemployable. During the celtic tiger boom years there was an urban and rural unseen underclass of those who because of educational disadvantage or geographical isolation never made it into the mainstream salariat. Whole families depended on assorted welfare entitlements. The Vincent de Paul visitors were aware of such families in many places, but the media and the mainstream politicians scarcely gave them a blink of notice. Parents in these households bought second-hand school textbooks at special co-operatively run shops set up for the purpose. Parents frequented the thrift shops to search for suitable footwear and clothing for the children. Primary school children benefited from special footwear and book grants received discreetly through school principals. The SVP also established breakfast clubs in schools where needy children received tea and sandwitches and did some homework 45 minutes before formal lessons began. That scattered underclass will stand up psychologically to the deepening recession better than many of those experiencing or about to experience unemployment for the first time. Many of this underclass don't vote in elections. Deep down they know the formal world of politics won't put jam on their breakfast table. That's left to the SVP.
