Wallets Full of Blood: Houses On The Moon: 'Zombies Roam An Undead Republic'

category national | arts and media | feature author Thursday February 19, 2009 16:57author by arrimletinrip Report this post to the editors

'Bringing The Blood Back Home'

“An aristocracy in a republic is like a chicken whose head has been cut off; it may run about in a lively way, but in fact it is dead.” Nancy Mitford

Amidst the collapse of the Irish economy, the inhabitants of a rural hinterland begin to feel the touch of the dead hand of the housing market.

Set in the notorious ghost estates of post 'celtic tiger' Ireland, 'Wallets Full of Blood' features Dennis Hopper as the voice of Brian 'Brains' Ahern.

'Brains' is a developer and a 'big man' in politics. He's also the overseer of a particularly gory property price collapse on 'Fiddler's Green'. He reckons he can clean up as a result of the creeping zombification all around him but his plans take on a zero-sum logic of their own.

To save himself from the killing floor that results, 'Brains' attempts to turn his minions against each other but finds to his horror that control of the vicious cycle of blood and price drops has slipped from his greedy, grasping fingers.

His future (and everyone elses) lies in the cold dead hands of a different kind of market where the proles are making a killing for a change.

Zombies roam an undead republic.

The crisis consists precisely in the fact

that the old is dying and the new cannot

be born; in the interregnum a great

variety of morbid symptoms appears.

If you were at all concerned, or had the slightest suspicion, that the government didn't know what was going on, it turns out that the ECB still hasn't worked out its rules on how to help us.

Seems like Lisbon just ain't gonna happen this year...

Some of her family (specifically two sisters) were fascists - she was not. She was a socialist who supported another one of her sisters who travelled to Spain to help in the fight against Franco in the 1930's. http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_701702267/mitford_n....html

The title of the film combines bits of lyrics of two armageddon type songs I'm fond of

'Houses Everywhere' by Jinx Lennon: You can listen at this page: http://jinxlennon.com/video.htm

and

'Dead Flag Blues' by Godspeed You Black Emperor: You can hear it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aLjup934Rk

And an update about the little movie: It's been viewed more than 1000 times on the vimeo page - which for a kind of 'arty' experiment banged together in 4 days is to me at least very healthy. I've gotten a lot of nice feedback in my e-mail and it was great to see blogs like slugger / irishleftreview / notesonthefront etc featuring it on their pages. No formal reviews as yet. Some of those would be nice. I don't mean in 'publications' - just 'this is a review' kind of thing.

I'm trying out making a couple of 'sequels' set in the capital at present as the idea doesn't feel played out yet.

Anyway - pass it on if you like it.
