It is simplistic to blame the recent spike in wildfires on climate change, writes Paul Homewood. A more likely cause is the rewilding of uplands, supposedly to cut carbon emissions, and poor management of forested land.

Who was the Irish Mercenary Killed in Bolivia?

Michael Dywer killed in Bolivia alongside some Croat War veterans

Bolivian police Thursday foiled a plot to assassinate President Evo Morales, the country's vice president Garcia Linera said, calling the the suspects "a dangerous gang of Irish and Croatian mercenaries, as well as Bolivians."

When police moved in to arrest the five suspects at a hotel in the eastern Bolivian city of Santa Cruz, they became embroiled in a 30-minute gun battle, Morales said. Three of the gunmen were killed, including the irish national Michael Dwyer, and two were arrested. Officials recovered heavy armaments at a nearby warehouse that authorities said belonged to the gunmen.

The Inka Cola blog reports that the Irishman was a busy social networker, with profiles on both Facebook and Bebo. On Facebook he was a 'friend' of Croatian Eduardo Rozsa Flores, apparently a well-known war veteran and fascist.

On his Bebo page( which has since been taken down ) Inka Cola noted the following details -
- Michael loves guns and fancies himself as a sniper
- Has Bruce Willis's "The Jackal" as the answer to his "What kind of Assassin are You?" profile box
- Thinks he's hard (?)
- Member of an Irish battlefield simulation club

All very bizarre.
Anybody know anything else about this bloke?

According to the front page of The Sunday Times this individual was employed with a Galway based security firm and it was they who sent him to Bolivia for some training . According to previous entrys in his Bebo he had been given use of or somehow acquired a new BMW motorcar since his arrival in Bolivia . The name of this security form which allegedly sent him to Bolivia however remains somewhat elusive .

The Examiner quotes Garda sources as saying that Dwyer "had no criminal history and was not known to gardaí". However, the report does hint that Dwyer might have a British Army connection, but does not provide more than an un-named source- "One source suggested he had military training at a young age, possibly in the British army"
