On Thursday 21st January, UCC Historical Society will host a screening of the acclaimed 2006 film The Wind that Shakes the Barley. The screening will be from 6.00-8.00pm in Boole 2, University College Cork and will be followed by a lecture by Dr. Donal Ó Drisceoil from 8.00-9.00pm entitled “Framing the Irish Revolution: The Wind that Shakes the Barley”. All are welcome to attend either or both events. Donal Ó Drisceoil is a lecturer in the Department of History, UCC and was the historical advisor on the Film. Directed by Ken Loach, the film is set during the Irish War of Independence and Civil War. Written by long-time Loach collaborator Paul Laverty, the film tells the story of two Co Cork brothers played by Cillian Murphy and Pádraic Delaney, who join the IRA. Widely praised, the film won the Palme D'or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Loach's biggest box office success to date, the film received worldwide acclaim. |
