Blasphemous Exhibition

Thanks to all of the artists who repsonded to the open call for the Blasphemous Project. Although we could not include everyone due to the extremely high volume of submissions, we will keep all of you in the IMOCA database of artists for future possible shows. We look forward to seeing you all at the opening on Good Friday, April 2.

 By this time most people in Ireland, and indeed many throughout the world, are aware of the ‘Blasphemy Law’ that came into effect January 1st this year. It may seem like the perfect time- or a perfectly awkward time- for such a law. In just the past few months, when most people would probably be more inclined to hear about how their politicians and governments are trying to salvage their economies, we have heard increasingly shocking reports from within the Irish Catholic system; from Germany’s Catholic churches, including abuse cover-ups and priest-shuffling that reportedly includes the now-pope Benedict; murder attempts on Kurt Westergaard and plots -from within Ireland no less- to assassinate Lars Vilks, two artists who were willing to portray the prophet Mohammad.
In light of all of this, to say that this law is focused in the wrong direction is an understatement. With €100,000 bounties issued on artists’ heads by extremist groups, as in Vilks’ case, or with churches asking their parishioners to donate money to help pay the legal fees for the abuses inflicted upon them and their loved ones (as did Dennis Brennan, Bishop of Ferns in County Wexford, Ireland), it would seem that if any new laws regarding religion were needed, they need to be designed to protect us from them.
Regardless of whatever the opinions of those who have worked to produce or support this show, this is not an atheist agenda. Some of the participating artists identify as christians; others as wiccans, pagans, buddhists. As much as it is a direct confrontation of this dangerous law, Blasphemous is a celebration of artistic freedom and intellectual discourse. Perhaps the most blasphemous notion to any religion is the existence and practice of all others, and so keeping that in mind we applaud the diversity of the artists’ practices, if only to present a tableau for debate.

Michael Nugent of Atheist Ireland opened the exhibition pointing out that Ireland Blasphemy law was being used by Fundamentalist Islamic States to justify their campaign to have Defamation of Religion made an International criminal offence. Also, a German artist who had drawn cartoons of Jesus had his work published in Greece. Subsequently an International Arrest Warrant for him was issued by a Greek court. A lower German court ordered his extradition but it was overturned on appeal. Still, frightening that this can happen in Europe.
If it was an International criminal offence then you might be extradited to Saudi Arabia...

To date 7 people were arrested in Ireland in connection to this alleged 'plot'
To date 3 were released with 48 hours, 2 more were released without charge withiin a further 48 hrs, and so far only 2 people have appeared in court.
One of those was charged with immigration-related 'offences' relating to his identity, and the other was rather vaguely charged with 'making an SMS of a menacing nature'.
It has not even been specified to whom this person allegedly sent the alleged menacing SMS, so for all we know it could have been to his neighbour, or his bookie, or his milkman, if he ever even sent such an SMS, something which is far from proven
So neither has been charged with anything that could be claimed to be 'terrorist' or even 'murder' related.
so despite the media hullabaloo there has been ZERO evidence presented to support these allegations.
Freedom of expression includes the freedom to irritate and provoke. Cartoonists implicitely assume that meaning of freedom.
We cannot control whatever mass emotions may result from antagonist free expression. Mahatma Gandhi understood that fact from his experience of mass rioting between Hindus and Muslims during the Indian independence crisis of 1947, when 5 million people moved frantically from Pakistan to India and in the opposite direction. He resorted to a public fast in a successful effort to stop the cycle of public taunts, counter taunts and subsequent murderous riots between members of the two religious communities. The poster of the short article that begins this thread may not have factored in this historical episode when he began the piece with the quote from Gandhi: “There is no god higher than truth.”- Ghandi.
Freedom of expression in liberal western society also includes the freedom to self-regulate your individual urge to antagonize and provoke based on a commonsense calculation of the ability of those who are antagonized to control their emotions.

The word "fag" means different things in America and UK/Ireland.
In Ireland and Britain a "fag" is a cigarette.

The Enlightenment was and is against clerical interference in education and politics in the name of theological notions that do not have much to do with the "price of fish" nor sound transparent accountability to voters. In Britain, France and Russia the formative revolutions and civil wars were all against the abuse of office by the clergy even before the abuse of office by kings. The US deliberately denied "establishments of religion" because the founding fathers all came from families that at sometime fled persecution by an establishment of religion - and the same for most migrants to the USA since - including Moslems.

If Muslim fundamentalists were to bring a blasphemy charge against belief in the Trinity into the courts they'd lose it with heavy costs. The preamble to Bunreacht na hEireann invokes the Trinity, so whatever the constitution affirms cannot be judged a blasphemy. Up Dev!

I'm sure not going to join that 'Church of God' outfit since it has got its theology in a twist. Hell is not reserved for atheist or anybody. Divine mercy is offered to all who change heart and take a different direction. Talk about mercy, not hell. Hell is other people, not a specific place.
