South Park creators warned over Muhammad depiction

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Thursday April 22, 2010 11:14author by People Before Prophets Report this post to the editors

Looks as if the South Park crew could have some problems angry islamic fundamentalists. Mocking buddha and christ is one thing but mocking the "prophet" of islam is a tad more dangerous.

Islamists have warned the creators of TV show South Park they could face violent retribution for depicting the Prophet Muhammad in a bear suit. A posting on the website of the US-based group, Revolution Muslim, told Matt Stone and Trey Parker they would "probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh". The Dutch film-maker was shot and stabbed to death in 2004 by an Islamist angered by his film about Muslim women.

The posting gave details about a home Stone and Parker reportedly co-own. It also listed the addresses of their production office in California and the New York office of South Park's broadcaster, Comedy Central.

"We have to warn Matt and Trey that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh for airing this show," warned the posting, written in the name of Abu Talhah Al-Amrikee. "This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them," it added.

In the 200th episode of South Park, broadcast in the US and UK last week, Muhammad appeared several times inside a bear suit. The prophets of the other main religions were also depicted, including a drug-snorting Buddha.

when someone's life is threatened over the contents of a cartoon. All religions should be abolished if the human race is to ever have any hope of progressing.

Sometimes programs like south park or stand up comedy seem like the only places left where certain things can be said, so repressive is our society

I hope matt and trey are not put off by these nutcases

Free speech and Islam seem to be incompatible, as far as some muslims are concerned anyway. The brutal murder of Theo van Gogh in 2004 and the threat to Lars Vilks and Salman Rushdie shows that you have to take these extremists seriously when they post their warnings online. The reaction of many muslims during the Danish cartoons controversy shows a fundamental difference between islamic responses and those of other religions, despite offensive portrayals of Jesus or Buddha we don't hear of followers of those faiths issuing death threats to comedians, artists or writers say.

If Allah or mohamed are really offended by all this, let them send down a few lightning bolts to punish those who have crossed them!

The idea that there is free speech is a false one.

In Britain if you praise Osama Bin Laden you will get done for terrorism. Elsewhere in Europe and in Canada if you deny the holocaust you are liable to end up behind bars.

Yet in all these countries it is perfectly legal to insult prophets/leaders of millions of people.

Well 'Unseen ocean' , Osama bin Laden is the promoter of mass murder, the Holocaust DID murder six million Jews and Islam is not exempt from criticism, if you want sharia law move to Saudi Arabia. Hopefully one of those wonderful drone aircraft will find Osama one of these days and send him where he'll find out in person that they're no 72 virgins waiting for him!

not once have you attacked any other religion -the Talmud promotes incest and paedophilia (as long as the child is non-jewish, no crime has been committed) yet you seem to have no problem with that - stop pretending to be anything but a racist islamophobe

The 'threats' were made on a website called 'Revolution Muslim'

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolution_Muslim) 'Revolution Muslim' was setup and operated by:

. .. Yousef al-Khattab, born Joseph Cohen, an American Jew who converted to Islam in 2000 after living in Israel and attending an orthodox rabbinical school there, then returned to New York,[1][3][4] where he is said to have worked driving a taxi,[5] operating a pedicab,[6] or running a restaurant

also according to both Wikipedia and none other than Richard Dawkins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Root_of_All_Evil%3F#Je...salem)

. . .Yousef al-Khattab, formerly Joseph Cohen, an American-born Jew who came to Israel as a settler before converting to Islam

pretty much anybody can register at a website and post statements,

Muslim group acquitted over cartoon
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/world/2010/0424/122....html

AMSTERDAM – A Dutch court has acquitted a Muslim group of inciting hatred with a cartoon that questions the Holocaust, in the latest case to provoke debate about freedom of speech in the Netherlands.

The Arab European League (AEL), which published the cartoon on its website, was cleared of insulting Jews because it was not aiming to dispute the Holocaust but to highlight perceived double standards in free speech.

The AEL cartoon shows two men, beneath an “Auschwitz” sign and beside several bodies, saying the victims might not have been Jewish but the target was six million – the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust.

The AEL said the cartoon was part of a campaign it launched in 2006 to show “the double morals of the West during the Danish cartoon affair”. The image came with a disclaimer saying the AEL did not support the views of the cartoon.

“The context in which this cartoon was published takes away from its criminally offensive nature,” the court said in a ruling published on Thursday.

A cartoon in a Danish newspaper in 2005 showing Islam’s Prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban sparked violent protests in Muslim countries. The backlash prompted the newspaper to apologise, but the Danish government defended its right to freedom of expression.

As a supporter of free speech, the AEL did not complain about the republication of the Prophet Muhammad cartoons in the Netherlands. However it argued that its own cartoon was meant to show that other religious communities were also sensitive about certain images.

Tensions over immigration and the rights of religious groups are testing the attitudes of the liberal Dutch. A spate of recent cases have struck at the heart of the Dutch constitution, raising questions about when free speech crosses the line and becomes discrimination.

the proof of what the AEL are claiming, i.e.; to show “the double morals of the West during the Danish cartoon affair”, lies in the fact that the Dutch authorities for some reason felt justified in charging the AEL with 'inciting hatred' while no such charges were brought against the publishers of the cartoons.

Well 'anti-racist' you state that "the Talmud promotes incest and paedophilia", I'm not fully familiar with the talmud but in common with the bible and the koran I've no doubt that it promotes many objectionable practices, all these middle eastern mythologies promote a primitive, misogynistic dogma and it's a pity humanity hasn't outgrown them.

You accuse me of islamophobia (a catch-all for any criticism of islamist practices or violence) but like many on this site you immediately try to balance it with a bit of Jew-bashing, talk of 'pot calling kettle'! As for the RC Church I haven't got the time to list all their crimes against humanity so I'll just mention Crusades, Inquisition and institutional child abuse to show I'm not forgetting them.

I also find Hasidic Jews to be a pretty extreme and narrow-minded bunch but then they're fundamentalists so no surprises there!

I've got a bible and a koran (they're both terrible reads!), do I now need to get the Talmud? Just in the interest of balance like!

Perhaps it's the far-left that needs to consider its love of radical islam? Fools from SWP carrying signs saying 'we are all Hizbullah now', no to them you're just a foolish kufr infidel, grow up!

Compared to bloodthirsty Irish gods like "The Morrigan" that Jesus guy and the guy who founded Islam aren't too bad after all.

St. Patrick converted the Irish in a single generation because we Celtic gods were so vengefull and horrible.

Every Irish person lived in fear of me,The Morrigan, and my sister The Banshee.

See my sister the Morrigan here:
