Turkish PM May try to break the Blockade

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Sunday June 06, 2010 07:13author by Bazooka Joe Report this post to the editors

According to a Lebanese newspaper report on Saturday Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is considering travelling to Gaza in order to "break the Israeli blockade.”

Al Mustaqbal reported on Saturday that Erdogan is under intense political pressure to cancel security agreements with Israel. The newspaper said that Erdogan floated the idea with close associates and even informed the United States of his intention to ask the Turkish Navy to accompany another aid flotilla to Gaza. The Americans asked Erdogan to delay his plans, in light of tensions on the region.

Turkey, as a member in good standing of NATO, could call upon much of the international community if its Navy were attacked, making it unlikely Israel would dare to attack.
