Italian company ICOP applying for tunnel tender

category mayo | environment | press release author Wednesday June 30, 2010 14:34author by Stop Shell Hell in Mayo Report this post to the editors

Italian company ICOP are currently applying for the tender to build the tunnel for the Shell onshore high pressure raw gas pipeline. The local community have been resisting Shell for the last 10 years and are fighting to protect their health, safety and environment.

This is a call out for protests to put pressure on ICOP to pull out.
Here is their website: http://www.icop.it/tool/home.php
And address:
I.CO.P. S.p.A.
via Silvio Pellico 2
33031 Basiliano UD,
Italy

And contacts: info@icop.it, tunnelcom@icop.it, fondazioni@icop.it, amministrazione@icop.it, personale@icop.it, acquisti@icop.it, tecnici@icop.it

T. +39 0432-838611
F. +39 0432-838681

I.CO.P have a poor health and safety record for their projects-here are some examples:

a worker of ICOP, Luis Gentil Velandia Porras, died the 10 july 2009 in Camporosso (Udine) during the building of a pipeline. He was hit with a valve took out from a high pressure tube.

– 23/1/2009 during the building of a tram, 2 of the 40 segments of the tunnel felt down, opening a hole under two platform of the Mestre train station

– Unfair competition, links with Mafia
After the L'Aquila earthquake ICOP was immediately awarded the contract for building temporary houses without it being put out for public tender. There are links between ICOP, Tommaso Cannellaa and Bernardo Provenzano, a boss of a mafia family.

– ICOP won the tender to build the motorway Villese-Gorizia, but the TAR judged that it was illegal as the bridge designs were deemed unsafe.

All Italian companies have had an appalling record on workplace accidents and deaths for years. I believe it is one of the worst in the EU.

Since the 1st January 2010 (basically 6 months)
526 workers have been killed in the workplace.
There have been
526,668 accidents that left workers injured and
13,166 workers have been made invalids.

Obviously these figures are nationwide and refer to all occupations, industry, agriculture and the construction business but they are similar every year. Lack of oversight, drive to profit, ignorance and a "you don't count and we don't care" attitude have all been identified as factors.

Knowing this Irish workers should be very cautious in taking jobs with Italian companies and Irish authorities should know they will have their work cut out trying to enforce EU safety regulations. I presume they are basically applied in Ireland as, to the best of my knowledge, with all due proportion, we do not have similar figures for workplace accidents and deaths.
