Biden's team was still obliviously tweeting his resolve to fight on hours after he had decided to step down. So was the matter taken out of his hands? It has all the signs of an opportunistic palace coup, says Eugyppius.

The Dead of 9 Years of War on Afghanistan Remembered Outside 10 Downing St. London

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Friday October 08, 2010 21:39author by Ciaron O'Reilly Report this post to the editors

On Thursday I stood oppositie 10 Downing St./ London and read out the names of the Australian (21) war dead in Afghanistan
http://www.icasualties.org/oef/Nationality.aspx?hndQry=...ralia

The Australian names were interpersed with the names of civilian Afghani dead slain by Western forces over the last 9 years of U.S. led invasion and occupation of Afghanistan.
http://pubpages.unh.edu/~mwherold/memorial.htm

Thursday marked the 9th. anniversary of the U.S. led invasion. This week had seen a snow machine of hype from the White House "Drones take out Plot on the West" news stories.....presently being exposed as hype
see Guardian

The 9 hour vigil and reading out the names of Afghani and British (340) dead

was organised by "Justice not Vengeance" and the Oxford Catholic Worker. Participants included Chris, Martin, myself from London Catholic Worker, Susan and Miriam form Oxford Catholic Worker, Buddhist monks from the temples in Milton Keynes and London, Maya and friends from the Justice not Vengeance network and West End/ Brisbane homeboy Thomas who happened to be over in London.

Is this actually a news report or Link?? Come on Indymedia. This is a joke on reporting news, right??

what a terrific metaphor! Seriously. Great.

The prob is the drones aren't evenly officially acknowledged. If you were actually reporting anything of real value here, you would get on to this drone thing like yesterday's news. It's as big as a nuclear bomb, and you're missing it!! FFS...do we have to spell it out for yiz every time??

Well the news is that we are entering the tenth year of a war that ireland remains intimately involved in through its U.S. Base at Shannon Airport

Unless you heard anything I haven't, ths was the visible sign of dissent marking the anniversary in closest proximity to Ireland and involved members of the Irish diaspora based in London.

The links provided give a list of the war dead should you or others wish to duplicate the dissent outside your local British or U.S. embassy....you might find such links/resources handy.

Don't understand what you mean by "drone attacks aren't officially reported on". Reports of the drone attacks that killed a number of German citizens among others in northern Pakistan were big news internationally over the past week. The debate is over their significance (politically/militarily), legality etc. Midterm U.S. elections might be a hint to explain the hype

In terms of the state of Pakistan presently this is a fine article by Patrick Cockburn
http://www.counterpunch.org/patrick10082010.html

In terms of the sad state of the anti-war movement in the West. This one is worth a read about the demise of themovement in the U.S. ........

A Senseless War Begins Its 10th Year ...an address to the nation from President Barack Obama (as reported by Michael Moore)

The war in Afghanistan is only senseless because of the corruption of the Karzai regime and the diversion of resources to Iraq in 2003 by the Bush administration. The initial assault on the taliban regime and al qaeda in 2001 was a great success and severely damaged al qaeda's capability to launch terror attacks like the 9/11 atrocities. It was the failure of the Bush admin. to properly follow through the military intervention by tracking down and killing bin Laden, Zawahiri and Mullah Omar that has led to this ongoing war of attrition.

The NATO forces cannot allow the taliban to win if that results in the re-establishment of AQ training camps on Afghan territory. The drone attacks have had a number of successes in recent times including the killing of the seven German-Turkish terrorists during the week, well done lads!

If the US wanted Osama all they had to do was yank the leash, on their proxy war-dogs and SIS in Pakistan, and Mullah Omar would have had to deliver. The Karzai corruption follows from that of his masters in Washington, London, Nato and the mercenary armies bribing the taliban for protection, because they're worth it, and besides, thats their mafiosi modus operandum. Its the trillion in mineral wealth in the Hindu Kush, not any quest for democracy drew Bush Inc into their Halliburton/Xe Nam. That and the percieved need for full spectrum dominance over the region once they had the soviets ousted, and to make sure China didn't get yet another toe-hold in its quest for minerals and fuel for its emergence from relegation to backwater since the opium wars. And why do you think poppy production, almost eradicated by the taliban has bounced back, if not for the mafias that always accompany imperial wars.
Your drone attacks usually exterminate innocents and do more to drive recruitment of Islamic radicals than anything else.Just like the shoot to kill SAS fed young anger into the IRA till Blair showed he could actually use his undeniable intelligence constructively.
But then, like all muck, there's money in it for the vested arms industry, and their agenda of keep-the-shit-going-while we-milk-it. After all, they keep safely out of range while they churn the patriotic handles.
