UCC Philosoph debate on abortion

category cork | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Monday January 17, 2011 15:16author by Paul McAndrew Report this post to the editors

UCC Philosoph debate on abortion..tonight Mon 17th Jan, 7.30pm in the Kane building in G19, UCC

Please come along to support the pro-choice speakers

"The first House Meeting of the semester will take place this Monday, January 17th at 19.30 in Kane G19 on UCC Main Campus.

The topic is abortion. It promises to be an epic debate. Abortion is a live and controversial issue with its history of referendums and recent European Court Ruling on the issue that Ireland needs legislation to protect the mother’s right to an abortion when the pregnancy is putting her life at risk. Following the ECJ judgment Professor William Binchy of Trinity College Dublin, renouned and established legal academic and anti-abortion campaigner called for a referendum. If such a referendum is called, what way will you vote? The Philosoph want to know and we want to know why! If you have not made up your mind this is the perfect opportunity to become aqquainted with all the different arguments for and against the legalistaion of abortion and inform yourself before you decide in which camp you reside.

The abortion debate has many different dimensions. There are legal and constitutional issues, there are religious and ethical beliefs, there is scientific evidence and human rights arguments. It is these many different aspects and the divisive nature of the motion that make abortion such a lively and passionate debate. The audience, as always, will have their chance to speak and participate in the discussion. Before the audience’s submissions can be made, however, the House will be addressed by Professor William Binchy and Senator Rónán Mullen, two very distinguished speakers on the topic. When a topic and speakers of this calibre are combined an entertaining and enlightening evening is guaranteed, and being the Philosoph we intend to keep the craic going long after we are kicked out of the Kane, everyone is invited to join us in the SU Common Room for a social afterwards.

Girls and boys make mistakes.
University professors will not stop a girl from running away to get an abortion.

Most of us are mistakes.

from a friend who was there:-
"[the pro-choice] side won. The majority was big enough for there to be no need to count hands. Mary and Keith did ab brilliant job. Congrats. There were some excellent contributions from the floor."
