TESCO'S support of Greyhound racing's abuse of dogs.

category national | animal rights | press release author Monday January 31, 2011 19:44author by Bernie Wright - Greyhound Action Irelandauthor email bigbrownrat at gmail dot comauthor address GAI c/o po box 4734. d1.author phone 0872651720 Report this post to the editors

Irish greyhound racing and animal cruelty.NO to tesco clubcard deal supporting animal abuses.

SAY NO TO TESCO GREYHOUND RACING PROMOTION

Greyhound Action Ireland appeal to Tesco Clubcard Deals to remove their Irish Greyhound Racing deal from their brochure. Apparently 10 euro in clubcard vouchers will get you 40euro to spend at the Greyhound track. They say ‘experience the pace, the thrills and excitement that is a night at the dogs’.

We say racing causes the deaths and injuries of thousands of dogs annually. Dogs regularly found with mutilations, some drugged, burned, drowned , shot or just dumped in Ireland. This is well documented in the press. Over 25,000 Greyhound pups are born in Ireland annually. These are just the ones who are registered, others are killed at birth or as saplings due to no prospects at the track. See www.greyhound.org.uk for videos and more information in our IRELAND section.

After sending my concerns via email I received the following response.

Thank you for contacting us. I am very sorry that you are unhappy with
our decision to include greyhound racing in our Clubcard Deals scheme.

Clubcard Deals is our way of thanking customers for shopping at Tesco.
We reward Clubcard holders with a variety of deals, from money-saving
vouchers and airmiles, to magazine subscriptions and days out. Greyhound
racing is a popular activity in Ireland and this particular deal is just
one of a wide range of options that customers can choose from, so that
they can pick the one which is right for them.

I sincerely apologise for any distress that this may have caused you.
Please let me assure you we have passed on your concerns to the Irish
Greyhound Board.

Kind regards

Samantha Kaylan

It seems that Tesco are not going to consider removing the offer anytime soon.

Hi I got exactly the same but surely if enough complaints go in they might take it seriously .

Looking at other forums, many have had the exact same response so Tesco clearly have had enough complaints to warrant a standard email response. Let's keep them rolling in, have faith, we can make a difference!!

I have just sent an email to Tesco. I also noticed that Cork Groupon (www.citydeal.ie) has an advertisement up for a discount on tickets and food at Curaheen Park. I linked this page plus several others on their Facebook fan page and told them why I would no longer be following their site, nor would I allow their advertisements to appear on the websites I administer.

I think starting a petition on a site like Change.org could be very useful for getting the attention of both Tesco and Citideal.ie (perhaps 2 separate petitions). As a relatively recent resident of Ireland, however, I think someone with more knowledge of the politics and business scene would be better equipped to set this up. It looks fairly simple, I just don't know to whom the complaints would most effectively be addressed.

Will you take a look and set one up? I will happily sign and get my friends and family to do likewise.

http://www.change.org/start-a-petition

Thank you.

Cordially,
K. Stovold
