Irish Freedom Camp - Garden of Remembrance

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Saturday May 07, 2011 11:13author by éirígí PRO - éirígí Report this post to the editors

Join the Irish Freedom Camp at 3pm on Sunday May 15, Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin.

freedom_camp_cover.gif

At midday on May 17th the British Head of State, aka the ‘British Queen’, will touch down at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel on the outskirts of Dublin City. From there she will be taken by road to Áras an Uachtaráin in the Phoenix Park for an official welcome and a tree planting ceremony.

Windsor is then scheduled to attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square. The presence of the Commander-in-Chief of the British military in Dublin’s inner city on the afternoon of May 17th 2011 echoes with the presence of British agents in that part of Dublin on the afternoon of May 17th 1974.

On that occasion Windsor’s foot soldiers were in Dublin to plant three no-warning car bombs which ultimately killed twenty-six men, women and children. An entire family including a mother, father and two baby girls were killed on Parnell Street, just metres from the Garden of Remembrance. A further seven people died in Monaghan where a fourth car bomb exploded.

Despite the overwhelming evidence of British state involvement in the Dublin/Monaghan bombings successive British governments have blocked all attempts to get to the truth of who was responsible for the carnage of May 17th 1974. And the Dublin/Monaghan bombings are but one example of collusion between the British state and unionist death squads which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people in the occupied Six Counties. These people were as much victims of the British state as those that died at the hands of the official death squads of the British Army, RIC and RUC.

The Garden of Remembrance is dedicated to those who have died fighting the British occupation of Ireland. To bring the British Head of State there while Britain continues to occupy the Six Counties is provocative in the extreme. To do so on the anniversary of the Dublin/Monaghan bombings adds severe insult to injury.

At 3pm on May 15th éirígí will establish an Irish Freedom Camp at the Garden of Remembrance in opposition to the proposed visit to the monument by Elizabeth Windsor. The Freedom Camp will stay in place twenty-four hours a day to defend the memory of those who gave their lives that Ireland might be free and to defend the integrity of the ongoing struggle for Irish freedom.

If you support the cause of Irish freedom and you are opposed to the Windsor visit join us at 3pm on Sunday and stay for as long as you can, or join the camp at any point on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.

The success of the Irish Freedom Camp will depend on large numbers of people being present at all times over the forty-eight hour period that the camp will be in existence. If you are in a position to join the camp for a number of days, or hours, it would be helpful for you to email stopthevisit@gmail.com with the times that you are available to participate in the freedom camp.

David Cameron, aka Flashman, stuck up smarmy Tory toff, is to accompany Elizabeth Windsor on her journey to Ireland.

He is supposedly going for talks with Enda. Maybe he will give Enda tips on how to slash essential public services (but there is always, always money to start a war somewhere). About 5,000 people with disabilities marched in London today against Tory cutbacks of their support services.

I hope that Dublin gives them both the welcome they deserve.

Everybody who has a passion for civil liberties should join with republicans, socialists, anti war activists and anti imperialists enmasse at the gathering at Garden of Rememberence this coming Sunday 15th May 2011 at 3pm.

Since last week our back broken public purse has been prised open to pay for dozens of cops to sit in or wander aimlessly past and around various sites and locations around our city. This week and in particular the past two days this operation has intensified.Cops are now currently running about the place high on caffeine and thundering high rank pep talks tearing down political posters and harrassing activists insesintly.

Dublin City Council has been complicit in the states trampling of its citizens democratic rights to protest and publicise events legally by implementing/imposing a blanket ban on all postering in the city from Sunday 15th of May.

Roads have already been closed without adherence to normal protocal and procedure as laid down by Dublin City Council and there will be many more over the coming days.

Cops have called to businesses within sections of streets set to be closed fully or partially instructing them to close on the days of Royal Visit.Residents living close to sites to be visited have been doorstepped by cops and questioned about their planned movements on certain dates to come, asked their dates of birth, who will be in the home, will they refrain from occupying balconies and keep children off the streets. This is going to get worse.

At no other time in our history or future would such an infringment on our civil liberties be tolerated,so why now?

We must oppose this attempt to impose a police state. All over the Arab world nations are rising against what we the citizens of Dublin are accepting.

We must oppose the imposition of martial law.

We must oppose this Royal Visit.

In the immediate and short term there is not much we can do against the state juggernaut.
But they forget that when Lizzie and Oh-bomber have gone home we will still be here, and we will remember who the toadies were. We are keeping notes.

Living in the past???

By opposing monarchy????

Check your calendar.

Me, I stress the republican element rather then the nationalist.

but this little ol lady is 'The Firm'. One of the richest bitches stitchin. And among her stitches, is us, up. She's a fucking BONDHOLDER and owner of that oxymoronic 'free market'(well, for her hyenass its all free).

I'm not into any rabid reactionary stunts, but I respect anyone who recognises that this is just sending the message that the croppy must roll over.

We are recolonised.facto. But nationalism is not the way out. We need to build global and time any local act to cordinate with european and other internal efforts to nudge the tanker. Reaction will only feed the securic-rats. I see macaleese as just as symbolic of the pyramidal primitive as Lizzy Windsor.

Cathaoirleach éirígí Brian Leeson has confirmed that Sunday’s [May 15] protest at the Garden of Remembrance will be going ahead despite the security operation that is taking place in advance of the state visit by Elizabeth Windsor next week.

Speaking in Dublin he said:

“It is now clear that large parts of Dublin city are to be locked down for up to a week to facilitate the visit of Elizabeth Windsor. Those who are promoting this visit have claimed that it will promote better relations between the people of Britain and Ireland. The same apologists have also been telling us that the Windsor visit will be good for business and tourism.

“As the Garda lockdown of Dublin begins, the lies of these British apologists have been exposed. How exactly does the closure of a city, and the inconveniencing of hundreds of thousands of people, make for better relations between the people of Ireland and Britain? And how will the banning of parking in the city centre, the closure of motorways and random searches of pedestrians and motorists help business? And how does it help tourism to close key tourist attractions like Dublin Zoo, the Garden of Remembrance, the Croke Park museum and Trinity College?

“From the outset we in éirígí have been saying that this visit had nothing to do with improving relations between the people of Ireland and Britain, or providing a boost for business and tourism. This visit has one purpose and one purpose only – to consolidate British rule in the Six Counties and British influence in the Twenty-Six Counties. The architects of this visit ultimately want the Twenty-Six Counties to join the British Commonwealth as a first step on the road to the Twenty-Six Counties rejoining the so-called United Kingdom.

“Anyone who has walked through Dublin City in recent days cannot but have noticed the many hundreds of uniform and plain clothes Gardaí that are now patrolling the streets. Many of these Gardaí have been witnessed illegally pulling down posters and stickers opposing the royal visit. Our activists are being continuously harassed throughout Dublin as they legitimately distribute leaflets and erect posters. The atmosphere in Dublin City is closer to that of Pinochet’s Chile than that of a free Ireland.”

Leeson concluded: “We in éirígí will not be intimidated by the bully-boy tactics of the Gardaí. The battle-lines are now drawn. On one side are the politicians, the bankers, big business and the British royals. On the other are the people who have been betrayed, robbed and cheated by our so-called leaders. We are calling on people to get on the streets over the coming week to send a message to the ruling class that cannot be ignored and will not be forgotten.”

You should try and meet a bit further away from the Garden, somewhere in Summerhill maybe or in town, maybe in front of the Central Bank, so you can actually assemble before trying to make your way to the Garden. If you try and show up right at the Garden, the cops will just disperse you immediately and your energy will dissipate / fizzle out quickly (cf. the tiny marching distance of the anti-capitalist bloc marches from stephens green corner to the Dail - they were almost over as soon as they began)
