An Spréach, meaning The Spark, is a small housing action group formed due to the housing crisis in Dublin and beyond. We aim to use and develop tactics to highlight the appalling housing situation faced by many ordinary people throughout Ireland. We seek, through the use of direct action, to liberate vacant housing as a campaigning method and as a means of providing accommodation for those in need. read full story / add a comment ![]()

In 2012 public opposition forced the ditching of a plan for a "retirement village" on the side of the Dublin mountains, isolated from services and public transport and cut off by the M50, in an area normally zoned for agriculture and public amenity and widely used by the public. A previous plan for a private school on the site had been rejected for similar reasons in 2005. After the local elections the plan is back in a lightly tweaked form, with the developer's sister among a number of newly elected councillors supporting the project. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The Herald contains a bizarre full page whinge from the owner of the Paris Bakery about how the publicity their failure to pay their workers received has 'destroyed my life.' It's heartening as the occupation enters its 6th day to see that both Yannick Forel and Ruth Savill have come under enough pressure from the workers to feel the need to make public statements. But they need to meet with the workers and make arrangements to pay the estimated 130,000 in wages owed. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Wednesday 21st saw another successful defence against an eviction in Dublin. This time in the Stoneybatter area. We put out an alert after we were told that a gang of 3 men with crowbars "came this afternoon and broke in to one of the houses. About 40-50 people showed up outside to show support, then 5 Garda showed up. People inside resisted and argued until the alleged owners and Garda left the house and left the street to a large round of applause. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Members of Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning's family made a second trip from Wales to Dublin last week, to report back on February's visit to Chelsea in Fort Leavenworth, to catch up with friends made last November in Ireland and this January at the Manning Truthfest in Pembrokeshire, and to see a bit of Dublin. The family's visit to Chelsea in February was paid for with donations made to the Private Manning Family Fund, the first time in nearly four years that the family had received any financial support with prison visits. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The Euro and local council elections take place on Fri May 23rd and nationwide there are 11 MEPs to be elected to represent Ireland Euro elections will also be taking place across Europe for a grand total of 751 seats in the European Parliament. Regrettably the European Commission which is composed of 28 non-elected and appointed commissioners and is besieged by thousands of lobbying firms working for the private sector, is probably reckoned to have more power. Yet despite this Europe matters because at least 70% of our legislation comes from there and practically most of the regulation in a diverse range of areas originates from Europe and some of the more background regulation has its origins with corporate lobbyists with the aim of using heavy regulation to put smaller competitors out of businesses by greatly increasing the relative costs for smaller businesses. The main political parties of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael constantly tell us they are pro business and for jobs and the economy. In fact they are for big business, privatisation, outsourcing of jobs, lower wages, less social safety net and their support of big business and corporations constantly results in the suffocating of small business which are the very areas that lead to most employment. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Buried in the DLC CC website is a notice inviting members of the public to have their say in the 2016 - 2022 development plan. These are types of plans throughout the country that have been shaped, influenced and manipulated by corrupt developers in the past and probably will continue to do so in the future. The consultation period has already been in operation for over a month since March 19th and continues until May 14th. This is the public chance to have their say. However DLR have been very coy about this and have given very little publicity about it. It appears you have to know about it in order to find out about it. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The term ‘gentrification’ was coined in 1964 by sociologist – Ruth Glass. She defined it as a change in the social structure and housing market in working class areas. She explained – "One by one, many of the working class quarters have been invaded by the middle class - upper and lower ... Once this process of 'gentrification' starts in a district it goes on rapidly until all or most of the working class occupiers are displaced and the whole social character of the district is changed" (Glass, 1964, p.xvii). read full story / add a comment ![]()

Medium Geoff Keating is fighting to get his horses returned to him after Urlingford Pound entered private property in North Dublin and removed 15 horses. Spots looks malnourished after 6 days in the pound. Is this down to stress? Lack of food? Mistreatment? Or all of the above? You can see Spots is tied up and the rope is taut. This means Spots is unable to eat, drink, move around or even lie down. read full story / add a comment
