This evening I was listening to Minister Michael McDowell on Radio 1 at 5 O'Clock in relation to the murder of the young innocent man last night. This 'Dying Wasp' has an amazing lifespan. McDowell spoke of a research committee on how to tackle organised crime. This so called genius is now almost 7 years in power, between being Attorney General and in the last 5 years, Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform...... read full story / add a comment

In considering the recent revelations about Mark Haddock’s UVF career at tax payer’s expense, as a killer informant for the RUC, let us not forget Ian Paisley. Last week the Historical Enquiries Team of the PSNI was forced to apologise to Eugene Reavey for the RUC whispering campaign that tried to justify the sectarian shooting of Reavey’s three brothers in January 1976 in Whitecross, south Armagh. The shootings happened the day before the Kingsmill massacre of 10 Protestant civilians on January 5 1976, in the same general area. Three members of the O’Dowd family were also shot dead by the UVF the previous day. The Reavey and O’Dowd killings happened within 30 minutes of each other. read full story / add a comment

"Pain, tears, fear, hatred. But also euphoria, the desire to see an end to war and to fascism, the longing to create a new Italy. Life had a meaning in those days; it wasn't just a matter of dragging yourself from one day to next. Why deny it? Ettore knew: those months in the mountains had been the finest in his life. Afterwards there had been nothing of real interest. He didn't head for home. He turned into Via Lame, and arrived at the Porta. The sky was full of stars, hundreds of stars, maybe thousands. He had done it a thousand time, and he did it again. He remembered the battle, shot for shot. There was fog, and someone shouted, 'Garibaldi's fighting!' He had yelled with all his might, 'Red Star is winning!' " Ettore in ‘54’ p.310 read full story / add a comment

Today the mail brought the Pro-life camapign through my door, or as I would consider it unsolicited junk mail. Notably, however this time I read it because I was struck by the design on the colour leaflet and because it represents a step up in the upcoming constittutional referendum on the rights of the child by the right -wing in this country. No surprises there really. read full story / add a comment

The name "National Disability Authority" had a certain ring about it when it was set up in 2000 A.D. It seemed as if a strict teacher was being appointed to the task of preventing disabled people from being bullied any longer. However the fear now materialises that "authority" is the last thing disabled people want in their lives. Indeed most people are uncomfortable with the idea of authority and we all resent people who set themselves up to tell us what we can and cannot do. A cynical observer might conclude that the NDA has morphed into an organisation which colludes in the oppression of disabled people? read full story / add a comment

In the closing weeks of 2006 an opinion poll in the Basque region found over 65% of people there found a return to terrorism "most likely". In the closing weeks of 2006 Spanish prime minister Zapatero said he would carry personal responsibility if the process failed. In the closing week of 2006 a french youngster was held captive whilst his father's van was hijacked & then filled with explosive & driven to Madrid's airport where it was parked on the 29th. The next day 2 Equadorian migrants went to work just as usual & didn't get out of their cars in time to avoid being the first people murdered by ETA in several years. In the last 24 hours after an awkward silence of 3 days, the minister of the Interior has said the "peace process" is "broken" & "not to be saved". read full story / add a comment

The British and Irish Communist Organisation were a Maoist influenced group who in the 1970s were almost unique in supporting Ulster Unionism. They were prolific publishers and claimed an influence over large numbers of both left and right wing individuals. During the 1990s the core members of the group have embraced a neo-nationalist position and become prominent in debates on Irish historical revisionism. read full story / add a comment

My vision for 2007 is we will revisit 'Who framed Roger Rabbit?'. You see Bertie the half Jack Russell and Kerry Blue (what a mix?) will get rid of the rabbit subtly with some deviance thrown in........According to today's paper's he is making overtures to Joe Costelloe. If the numbers add up in June there could be an FF/Labour coalition.......Now what about McDowell. Let' us get real here. Can you see a Poodle from Ranelagh squaring up to a half Jack Russell and Kerry Blue seasoned Northsider......I don't think so...... read full story / add a comment

Let's face it- statistics bore most people (unless you're a nerd like myself). Statistics also tend to go over most peoples' heads esp. nowadays with the state of the world (in most ways) getting worse. People also feel disempowered, that individuals can't make any difference. read full story / add a comment
