Ógra Shinn Féin recently launched a film at a Basque/Irish Night in Conway Mill Belfast. The film explores the cultural, social and political realities in the Basque country and looks at the current struggle for independence. It is presented by Ógra Shinn Féin activists who travelled to the Basque Country in September to stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with the Basque people and youth movement Segi.

"Argos announced profits in 2006 exceeding 8.1 billion euro whilst profits for the first half of this year are up 50%. Despite this Argos are refusing workers a 10 % pay rise, which would bring hourly rates to 9.90 euro. The cost of importing strike breakers is greater for Argos than the pay increase sought by the workers. Last week, Stephen Sealey, the Brown Thomas Group Buying Director declared by email that his store s policy from February 2008 will be to stock no real fur products. Mr. Sealey confirmed that Brown Thomas will have a Fur Free policy; “from February 2008, Brown Thomas do not intend to stock any fur products. We work with a number of concession partners, and we have communicated this policy to them.” “to confirm we have told all concession partners they cannot sell rabbit fur, or other real fur in Brown Thomas and BT2”. Furthermore, Mr. Sealey added that “the only fur type product that will be acceptable in Brown Thomas is synthetic fur, or leather/suede/sheepskin/shearling.”

Yesterday evening, the Galway Bin Charges Campaign comprising outraged members of the public, activists from the SWP, SP, Sinn Fein and Galway Alliance Against War vented their anger outside and inside Galway City Council buildings against a proposal that, if adopted, would amount to a front frontal assault on the city's poor, thankfully, conscience prevailed, as such, GBCC wholeheartedly applaudes the city councillors for successfully defending the full waiver on refuse charges at the Budget 2008 meeting on Monday night.

Dette Mc Loughlin (SWP), spearhead of the campaign group said it was admirable, decent and right that councillors across party divides stood firmly against the proposed attack on the waiver system.

A public meeting is to be held in Galway in December to discuss the opening of a cultural and social centre in Galway.

A number of local charities and community groups have been invited to the meeting and the organisers are hopeful that it will gain support among these organisations.

Independent cultural centres have existed for some years in Dublin and Cork. Now a newly formed association in Galway aims to develop a community orientated and community organised, non-profit, cultural and creative space for Galway. read full story / add a comment
