posting from indymedia uk tent. chilling out at stirling ecovillage. helicopters still overhead and everything is great. will do full updatewhen get home.in brief collectively,we blockaded the major roads to gleneagles, went through the gleneagles fence, are having a bridge party in glasgow & stirling residents over for dinner on site this eve with entertainment fron the infernal noise brigade. the g8 summit was a disaster & we finally got asked about the issues! see the scotsman & uk dailies and for above interview with irish & english activists see ww.bbc.co.uk the interview went out live at 2:45 pm today, july 8th, directly before blair's "we failed utterly to agree on anything" " communique". we really are winning.. read full story / add a comment

Most of us had barely been asleep an hour, when at three o'clock the alarm went off. I woke to the sound of people shouting 'get out of your tent, the police are here'. Our delegates were sent to the front gate while the rest of us waited. They came back with the word that twenty police vans had arrived but they had said that they would not enter the camp. A small group of watchers stayed awake, the rest of us went back to our cold beds. read full story / add a comment

As I type, the indymedia centre on site here is packed to gills as stories are uploaded to the many countries around the world. Sorry no photos today; it was just too damn wet. What a long day. The last thing we did before we went to bed last night,was have a barrio meeting at which we sorted ourselves into affinity groups. Affinity groups are small groups of friends who undertake to look after each other on a protest. Each group is divided into buddies - smaller groups of two or three who undertake to always have each other in line of site. The 'short bus' arrived just after midnigh .Then most tried to get a couple of hours sleep, others waited around the campfire. At two, the sleepy camp roused itself. It was raining heavily and in the dark it was difficult to see very far. Shouts of 'cat' , 'seomra sproai' and 'red diesel' rang out as the three affinity groups called out to their members. read full story / add a comment

Police clamp down on "Carnival for Full Enjoyment". Slight over-reaction in the press - all handbag stuff really, no property damage. Not much debate at debate. Local Scots then take it upon themselves to repel invading English Police Forces into their city. read full story / add a comment

Ahern does not feel pressure over aid The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has said he does not feel under any additional pressure to raise Ireland's level of overseas aid in the wake of the weekend's Live 8 concerts. Mr Ahern said it was not possible to raise it from €600 million to €1.4 billion as he would not be able to explain such an increase to the Irish people. This report comes from the Indymedia centre in the Stirling campsite. Yesterday the Irish Barrio emptied as people headed either to Faslane or to Edinburgh. Throughout the days, reports and rumours indicated the the protests were been dealt with in very different ways. The Faslane protest proceeded without the expected mass arrest, while in Edinburgh the RTS-type activity was shut down before it even began. read full story / add a comment

Protests against the G8 are often portrayed as being just protest events with little in the way of serious alternatives being presented. However over 5,000 people attended the G8 Alternatives conference in Edinburgh yesterday to discuss the causes of poverty, environmental destruction, racism and to debate the alternatives to the present neo-liberal capitalist system. read full story / add a comment

Get this. Andrew Gilligan from the evening standard, who exposed the dodgy dossier was caught infiltrating the anarchist assembly. Amazingly few people recognised him. Once outedrecording the meeting - his bag was confiscated and his notes taken after a melee stopping him leaving the building. The Irish who were corralled by the police were released finally after about three hours, desperate for a pee, but otherwise unharmed. Some of the other Irish clown army had gone down earlier to show support, chanting ‘you are not allow’ and generally making a fool of themselves in front of the police. Outside the Forrest Café and the Indymedia centre, soundsystems entertained the crowd who drank and danced in the street late into the evening. read full story / add a comment |
