Bord na Mona warned over unauthorised peat extraction on Timahoe Bog, Co. Laois Bord na Mona has received a second solicitor’s letter warning that ongoing continuing industrial peat extraction on its bogs is unauthorised. The new warning relates to land leased by Bord na Mona to a private operator on the semi-state body’s Timahoe Bog in County Laois. read full story / add a comment

EU Biomass Case Denied Access to The Courts Applicants considering appeal to end burning forest wood as renewable and carbon neutral In March 2019 applicants from six countries including the USA brought a claim stating that the EU’s 2018 Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) will devastate forests and increase greenhouse gas emissions by promoting burning forest wood as renewable and carbon neutral. On 11 May 2020 the EU Court published an order that the applicants who have brought this case, including individuals and groups from Estonia, France, Ireland, Romania and Slovakia, do not have legal standing and that it will not therefore make a decision on whether or not the biomass provisions of RED II should be annulled. read full story / add a comment

Invasive Australian flatworm reaches west Cork Sellers of plants should warn public of dangers of contaminated garden matter The invasive Australian flatworm has reached the Beara peninsula in west Cork. Flatworms from New Zealand were first recorded in Ireland in the 1960’s but the Australian flatworm was not recorded until 1981. Flatworms are top-level predators of soil organisms. They eat earthworms and appear to have met no natural enemies of their own in Ireland. According to the National Biodiversity Centre, the implications of its indefinite spread for the drainage and fertility of our soil ‘pose a threat to Ireland’s biodiversity and economy’. Japanese knotweed and the zebra mussels are examples of invasive species now out of control in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

130 national and international groups have today written to all Irish Party leaders requesting them to remove support for fracked gas infrastructure in Ireland. The letter comes as negotiations for Government intensify and requests an explicit policy statement to be included in the next Programme for Government against the development of all new fossil fuel infrastructure in the form of LNG import terminals that could facilitate the entry of unconventional fracked gas into the Irish energy mix. Two fracked gas terminals, or - LNG - terminals are currently proposed, in Shannon and Cork. The terminals would be developed as import hubs, allowing fracked gas into the European market from the USA where there is currently an oversupply of this controversial fuel. The terminals would play an important role in the shale gas supply chain, the market for which is currently very unstable. read full story / add a comment

High Court to rule Friday on challenge to National Development Plan ‘Project Ireland 2040’ will lock-in fossil-fuel dependent infrastructure The failure of the State to properly assess the impact of the National Development Plan and National Planning Framework (‘Project Ireland 2040’) and to fully examine the alternatives will be the subject of a High Court Judgment to be published electronically this Friday, 24 April, 2020. Friends of the Irish Environment [FIE] was granted leave to challenge the Irish Government’s adoption of ‘Project Ireland 2040’ in May 2018. Mr. Justice Barr presided over four days of hearings beginning on 10 March, 2020. read full story / add a comment

Climate Case Ireland, brought by Friends of the Irish Environment (FIE), is a legal challenge to the Irish government’s 2017 National Mitigation Plan, a key plank of the State’s climate policy. FIE argues that the government’s decision to adopt a Plan that allows greenhouse gas emissions to increase by about 10% between 1990 and 2020 (instead of decreasing significantly over this period as the government has accepted is necessary to help avert dangerous climate breakdown) constitutes a violation of citizens’ constitutional and human rights and Ireland’s Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act 2015. read full story / add a comment

Industrial peat extraction at risk as EU Court triples fines requested by Commission Ongoing weekly fine of €100,005 by EU Court highlights ‘a matter of indisputable seriousness’ An angry European Court of Justice ruled today that Ireland’s conduct shows that it has ‘not acted in accordance with its duty of sincere cooperation to put an end to the failure to fulfil obligations’ under the EU Directive on Environmental Assessment. The Judgment arose out of the failure to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment for a windfarm in Derrybrien County Galway that led to a massive landslide on October 16, 2003 during which tonnes of peat were dislodged, polluting the Owendalulleegh River and killing 50,000 fish. read full story / add a comment

LEADING ENVIRONMENT GROUPS OPPOSE €7m DURSEY ISLAND MASS TOURISM PROJECT Wild Atlantic Way ‘undermining quality and experience of Ireland’s wild coastal landscape’ An €7m Failte Ireland flagship project has attracted the opposition of three of Ireland’s leading environmental organisations. An Taisce, Birdwatch Ireland, and Friends of the Irish Environment have all submitted extensive objections to the application by Cork County in partnership with Fáilte Ireland to An Bord Pleanala for a €7m development on Dursey Island off the west Cork coast. The current 6-person cable car is to be replaced by a state-of-the-art two-way cable car system capable of carrying up to 300 people each way every hour. UK Nuclear plant ‘delaying transition to renewable energy’ £2.9 billion increase in cost since 2017 ‘sucking up’ funds from sustainable developments The environmental charity Friends of the Irish Environment [FIE] have highlighted the rising cost and delays in construction of the new UK nuclear plant, Hinkley C, as ‘sucking up funds from sustainable developments’ and ‘delaying transition to renewable energy’. FIE made a site visit last week to the nuclear construction site on the Severn Estuary in Somerset as a follow up to their complaint to the Espoo Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context which led to public consultation by the UK Government on the proposed plant being extended to the Irish Republic. In the High Court today, Justice Garrett Simons granted Friends of the Irish Environment's application for a judicial review striking down regulations made by Ministers Eoghan Murphy and Richard Bruton in January which exempted industrial peat extraction from the planning system and granted them a period of unlicensed operation in the EPA licensing system. The Court found that the regulations were in breach of EU environmental law and were outside the powers of the Ministers who made them. read full story / add a comment

Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the first winter workshop organised by Cooley Environmental and Health Group. Next year's winter workshop is the 20th in a series dating back to the beginning of the Millennium. The workshop is slated for 25 January 2020 at 14:00 in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co. Louth.
