The employers have been on an offensive against the working class for the past forty years. The assaults on the public sector are the latest fronts. Unfortunately the union leaders have gone along with this offensive. In the present battles they bleat that they will get their members to give concessions as long as they can negotiate these. In essence this is what the union leaders position boils down to. Let us negotiate and we will get our members to make concessions. Of course this would continue to give the union leaders a role. The union leaders fear a victory in Madison and elsewhere because this would show that victories are possible and that defeat in front of this bosses offense is always inevitable. If this was shown it would undermine the entire propaganda of the union leaders and weaken their control of the movement. They prefer defeat to this. read full story / add a comment

They want the same thing our forefathers wanted when they decided to migrate. They are not strangers, they are not invisible, they are not disposable. FF, FG, Labour, ex-PDs, and other shades of establishement opinion are putting themselves forward as 'independents' in the upcoming election to Seanad Éireann. The mask of 'disability campaigner' or 'human rights advocate' is unfortunately the last refuge of some of them. This is most obvious on the university constituencies. Beyond the political and financial classes, Irish people’s response to the crisis has surprised many on the Left, especially in the UK. Looking to riots in Greece last year, and more tangentially, the revolts spreading like wildfire across the Middle East, why, they ask, has Ireland not been more restive? Why, with joblessness running at over 13% and 1,000 people emigrating every week, did it take two years, and the intervention of the IMF, for mass street protests to take place? Please print AFAR's poster calling on all voters to make use of their vote to keep Fine Gael out of power. The majority of normal people do not want Stag hunting legalised again, even if the ban is not being enforced. Place this poster in a prominent place to let people know how cruel they intend to be , that is if they get into Government. They want STAG-HUNTING back!!! Dan Boyle, formerly Bertie Ahern's choice for senator, is running for election in Cork South Central once again. This means he has to present a justification of his and his party's record as part of this government we've suffered for getting on four years. One of the ways he has been doing this is through his election literature, some of which I received in the post only this morning. A very timely and useful analysis of how Sinn Fein policy has moved significantly to the right in relation to the EU has appeared in the current edition of the Socialist Voice. It looks at how the party is now heading towards the right on the EU and that drift to the right is not an accident and will not end there. The Fine Gael party has pledged, in its 2011 election manifesto to reverse the ban on the horrific practice of carted stag hunting. This barbaric activity was banned by the outgoing government in June 2010 on both animal welfare and human safety grounds. This barbaric "sport" involved hounding a farmed or semi-tame deer for miles across Meath and North County Dublin until it was cornered by a pack of hounds and mounted hunters. Some stags got hit by traffic, got injured by colliding with fences or barbed wire or collapsed from exhaustion. Many of the stags that were chased died days after the hunt from captive myopathy caused by stress. NPWS reports reveal one Stag was drowned and another was choked. By the end of a days hunt, one, possibly two tame stags would be found with their tongues hanging out from exhaustion after a two to three hour chase. The hunted Stag is wrestled into a crate by about six men at the conclusion of the hunt or left out as an outlier to be hunted again. read full story / add a comment |
