Lest anyone think that strike action is old-fashioned the main Italian unions for workers in print and broadcast media have called a 48 hour series of stoppages starting today.

This is the third strike in Italy by media workers this year not including the general strike of November 25th & the fifth strike in the media sector in Europe in 2005. Most recently the workers of Liberation the French left-daily protested the rescue package of their company, and earlier this year a one day stoppage at the BBC saw workers there fight lay offs and continuing privitisation. read full story / add a comment

Organise rank and File Solidarity

If one common message is being presented from Government, employers and union leaderships it is that the Irish Ferries dispute is an exceptional case, well outside the safe reliable boundaries of social partnership and with no effect on the lives of the average worker.

In December 2004, Swedish trade unions launched a boycott of Laval & Partneri, a Latvian construction firm that is carrying out building work at a site near Stockholm, calling for the Latvian workers involved to be paid the same as their Swedish counterparts.
