At least 20 people were detained, both supporters and Russian Orthodox opponents of the women, said to be members of a punk band, Pussy Riot. The women were arrested last month after an obscene political song was played inside the cathedral in Moscow.

Brian Faulkner the last Prime Minster of Occupied Ireland like the present autocrat, the unelected English Tory, Owen Paterson was an committed foxhunter. Faulkner lived in Highlands Estate, near the village of Seaforde and surrounded himself and his family like Paterson today, with the heavy security presence of the disgraced Ulster Defence Regiment, while Paterson uses their renamed successors, the Royal Irish Rangers for whom he raised a huge sum of money riding in the worlds most horse cruel race of 1,000 kilometers over 10 days in the Mongolian Derby last Summer. Faulkner who was ultra security conscious had every room in his house leading to another, with panic buttons everywhere. Despite all of this his horse of fenian pedigree got him. read full story / add a comment

Hezbollah leader Sayyid Nasrallah in his first interview in six years, on the world premiere of Julian Assange’s The World Tomorrow on RT confirmed that the Syrian opposition refused his offer to mediate. Nasrallah told Assange that Hezbollah supports Syrian president Bashar al-Assad as Syria supported resistance in Lebanon and “hasn't backed down in the face of Israeli and American pressure.”

Nasrallah, a freedom fighter to millions though a terrorist to the ruling classes of US, Israel, Canada and the Netherlands, says Assad’s regime “served the Palestinian cause very well.” This is why Hezbollah supported the so-called Arab Spring in Tunisia, Yemen, Egypt and elsewhere, but ln Syria, Hezbollah urged the opposition to engage in dialogue with President Bashar al-Assad.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon of the Front de Gauche is now the third candidate in the French Presidential election, at 16% he is level with La Pen but his trajectory is upward. His standing is sending shivers up the spines of the French Bourgeoisie, fearful of what concessions Edwin will wring from Hollande for support in the second round of voting. Here are two articles regarding his candidacy. Full texts at links. read full story / add a comment

Mounties were apparently well-bred Englishmen defending the ideals of the British empire according to English writers. However. that's not exactly how writers from the rest of the world see them, with their history of shootouts and extra-judiciary killing and kidnapping. The Mountie according to Brit writers could ride into a hostile native American camp and arrest a chief 's son without raising his weapon, because of a violent reputation of power. residing not in himself but in the history of the British Empire he symbolized. read full story / add a comment

The New Yorker Magazine has revealed that the dissident Iranian opposition group Mujahideen-e-Khalq (M.E.K.) has been trained by the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) since 2005 at a secret military site in Nevada. The author of the article, Seymour Hersh, recounts how Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency told him that information supplied by the M.E.K in regard to Irans commencing enrichment of uranium at a secret underground location was given to them by Mossad.

Protest at the Fine Gael Ard Fheis, assemble 1pm, Saturday 31 March at Parnell Square. March to National Convention Centre, IFSC..

As the March 31 deadline approaches it is clear that huge numbers are refusing to pay. Mass non-payment of the household tax will not just be a massive blow to an unjust tax it will also be a massive blow to the Government’s entire austerity drive. read full story / add a comment

The Sunday independent is the paper that defended Bertie Ahern tooth and nail. This is the paper that helped him win the 2007 general election. This is the paper whose jaded star columnist, Eoghan Harris, denounced all and sundry who criticised Ahern and who Ahern appointed a Senator as a reward for his scribblings.

This is the paper that today takes the high moral ground with RTE. This is the paper that covers acres of newsprint with hypocritical calls for the heads of RTE staff and for full disclosure. What about full disclosure of how the Sindo got it wrong on the death of Liam Lawlor, falsly accusing the corrupt politician of being in a car with a prostitute. It is the Sunday Independent that has prostituted itself to power in the name of its own power to destroy reputations. read full story / add a comment

When Boris Johnson cancelled the annual St Patrick’s Day dinner in 2009 there was widespread disbelief about his decision. His remarks this week reveal what lay behind that decision. Many Londoners will be disturbed by the mayor of London’s contemptuous remarks about a community which has given, and continues to give, so much to our capital city. read full story / add a comment

For the past six months and longer once Libya had fallen to the NATO sponsored 'rebels', we have faced a continuous media onslaught about Syria with reports of protests, shootings, killings, attacks, bombing and so forth. The backdrop to the narrative is that this is part of the Arab Spring which started last year and it is a good thing overall. So many people are probably wondering what really has been happening, given that this is the same media that was cheer leading the Iraq war almost 10 years ago even though at least a million+ are now dead as a result. And yet somehow they want to imply that they are doing the right thing now. We should also recall that this is the same media that is promoting austerity and encouraging us to accept the blame for the mad years of the bubble and as a consequence we should pay up the €90 billion bailout and in the process see all the state services stripped to the bone. They are presenting the uncomplicated truth surely read full story / add a comment
