It seems that the Galway by-pass may not now go ahead as planned after a dramatic eleventh-hour realisation by the Minister of the Environment that he is a member of the Green Party. "I had no idea I had these sort of powers, to stop developments that threaten the country's environmental heritage and prevent loss of habitat, until one of my civil servants (who I was making tea for at the time) pointed out that the Galway by-Pass is not sponsored by Shell, and although the Corrib bridge has a confusing name, it actually has nothing to do with the Corrib natural gas (eight billion euro giveaway) scheme in Mayo!" the Minister is not reported to have said. read full story / add a comment

As the country gears up for increasing economic and social pressures, Ireland is likely to see a rise in campaigning from people of all walks of life. This coupled with the increased awareness of our responsibilities to be active citizens, has inspired two Galway based agencies to join forces in creating a new Advocacy Internship programme. SpunOut.ie, the Galway based national youth charity and the Community Knowledge Initiative at NUIG are launching the new Advocacy Internship programme to give young people an opportunity to work on promoting activism, awareness and civic engagement in the community and to encourage others to get involved in creating positive change. read full story / add a comment

As you will no doubt be aware, the events of the last couple of months have left many bewildered and aghast at the management of our current Economic reality. Unfortunately this reality has seen an unbridled dismantling of the Equality infrastructure within the Republic of Ireland. The budgetary cuts of the National Disability Authority, Legal Aid Board, the Data Protection Commission and of course the most dramatic 43% cut in new funding of the Equality Authority has seen the effective disarming of civil society at a time when we all need to acknowledge our rights and responsibilities. Mr. Crowley's address to the society, will examine some of these issues while also looking forward to seek solutions in our present situation. read full story / add a comment

Dublin Bus is slated to see huge cuts in both staff and services. As many as 290 workers and 100 buses will be cut. This means fewer routes and less frequent service. If the Dublin Bus workers go on strike, it will mean an inconvenience for a few days. However, if they take action and force the company to back down, it will in the long run save us all time and money and will help the environment. It will also serve as a message to the politicians. If they want cuts, they can start by tightening the belts at the top, not the bottom. The politicians are giving bailouts to bankers while they hand out cuts to workers and commuters. It's clear where the money to support public services should come from. It should come from the people who created the crisis! read full story / add a comment

At all levels, the education system is under attack from the present government. The savage cuts already announced at primary and second level appear to be just the first steps in what will be a sustained attack on the public sector in general and education in particular – both from the point of view of the provision of the service and the wages and working conditions of those employed in it. read full story / add a comment
