Single issue demands such as the movement against water rates hold back the class struggle by suggesting that capitalism can continue in the absence of these charges or taxes. This is because such demands are not embedded in a programme of an interlinked series of demands that challenges the capitalist system. read full story / add a comment

Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival

Guth Gafa (meaning ‘captive voice’) is Ireland’s only independent documentary film festival. We focus on showcasing the latest award-winning International and Irish documentary films on thought-provoking subjects, and promoting the art of great story-telling, through film, to rural Irish communities.

The festival returns this year in not one, but two magical locations, in Counties Donegal and Meath. It will get underway on Saturday, October 25th and Sunday October 26th in the unspoilt 17th century village of Malin, Co Donegal, its spiritual home. Over the following weekend, November 1st and 2nd, it will move to the magnificent and tranquil grounds of the 18th century Headfort House, a hidden gem close to the historic village of Kells in Co Meath. The objective of bringing a second location to the festival is about creating opportunities for as wide an audience as possible to see human rights and social issue documentary films.

Documentaries screened arouse great debate and discussion, and Guth Gafa’s trademark of inviting all filmmakers to present their films and discuss them with the audiences, makes the festival a unique experience for film lovers. There are few film festivals in Europe quite like Guth Gafa.

Every year, the festival brings an intimate but intense hotbed of documentary film to Ireland. With family screenings and workshops running in parallel, the 8th Guth Gafa promises to be another great festival. Guth Gafa is proudly presented with the support of the Arts Council of Ireland, Bórd Scannán na hÉireann/The Irish Film Board, The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, Honeycomb – Creative Works, Fáilte Ireland, Donegal County Council, and Meath County Council. read full story / add a comment

Radical Routes begin an all-island speaking tour at the end of this month to people to set up their own co-ops. They are presenting this as a way out of both the precarious rental market and the trap of long-term mortgage debt.

The tour will draw on their experience where the Radical Routes network has over 35 member co-ops. They say that "While the legal and financial structures relevant to setting up a co-op are different in the UK and Ireland, the experience learned from establishing these projects in the UK is valuable to anyone in Ireland considering setting up a co-operative and taking control of their own housing situation."

The Judicial Review of the Minister of Justice’s refusal to grant Michael McKevitt enhanced remission was scheduled to commence this morning in Court 4 of the High Court. However, upon arrival at court McKevitt’s legal team was informed that his case was being removed from the immediate hearing list and being placed instead on the Administration List – with a new date yet to be scheduled.

Michael McKevitt’s legal team protested that today’s date had been scheduled by a High Court judge before the summer break; that the case concerned the potential unlawful detention of a prisoner and a citizen’s deprivation of liberty, and that the case should be given priority and should commence as previously scheduled. read full story / add a comment

The rhetoric by the Sinn Fein, the Anti Austerity Alliance and the People Before Profit Alliance featuring on RTE's Prime Time programme amounts to nothing but illusion. Their election candidates showed no understanding of the need for revolution. Their rhetoric suggested that capitalism can be managed or reformed to the benefit of the working class by effectively taxing the rich and not the working class. Indeed the entire show confined itself to suggestions as to how to reform capitalism in one way or another. In that way the participants sought to effectively defend the capitalist system. Essentially all contributors were essentially advocating bourgeois politics. If the Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party were genuinely revolutionary they would have challenged RTE and its other contributors by advocating the need for revolution. read full story / add a comment

I have to ask: does the Catholic Church have a death wish?

Hare coursing is a horribly cruel “sport” that is a crime in many jurisdictions. It’s bad enough that the Irish government allows it…but this week pictures circulating on social media (twitter and facebook) clearly show a Catholic Priest officially BLESSING a hare coursing venue. read full story / add a comment

The Irish government is charging for public water as part of its TISA signup. This is just the start, we will all pay for all water if they have their way, even if we don't get any services from Irish Water. The eventual plan will be to privatize all resources so that absolutely nothing will be free in this country. read full story / add a comment
