The latest in the series of ships to Gaza - the Estelle has been boarded by the Israelis. Initial reports had indicated it was being attacked.

The ship with a crew of 20 aboard with people of eight nationalities was boarded by Israeli forces and forced to sail to the port of Ashdod
In an act violating international maritime law, Israeli naval forces boarded a humanitarian aid ship, the SV Estelle, that was en route to the Gaza Strip bringing humanitarian aid supplies including musical instruments and building materials. These are among the thousands of items still banned by Israeli forces from entering Gaza. read full story / add a comment

We don't have them, not because of any flaw in the Irish character or because the people are supine, or have a high tolerance of distress. We don't have them because revolutionary socialists have not provided the necessary requirements. read full story / add a comment

Hopi’s principled opposition to the Iran Tribunal is not because we are soft on the Islamic republic, as our opponents have alleged. On the contrary, we are committed to the revolutionary overthrow of the Islamic regime and all its factions. However, we believe alliances pretending to pursue a ‘non-political’, ‘human rights’ (read rightwing, pro-imperialist) agenda are a serious threat to the future of the revolutionary movement of workers in Iran. Those sections of the left who cannot see (or who pretend they cannot see) the serious risks posed by their collaboration with those involved in regime change from above, such as the Iran Tribunal, will become mere pawns in a game where the winner is international capital (and that inevitably includes Iranian capital). read full story / add a comment

Animal protection groups held a peaceful demo outside Dail Eireann yesterday (October 18th) The aim was to highlight the government’s shameful plan to exempt hare coursing and fox hunting from the Animal Health and Welfare Act, and to remind Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney of his pledge to act against the horrific practise of “digging out” foxes that escape underground during a hunt. read full story / add a comment

Film description follows”

“Documentary look at the 1996-97 effort of the dancers and support staff at a San Francisco peep show, The Lusty Lady, to unionize. Angered by arbitrary and race-based wage policies, customers’ surreptitious video cameras, and no paid sick days or holidays, the dancers get help from the Service Employees International local and enter protracted bargaining with the union-busting law firm that management hires.

We see the women work, sort out their demands, and go through the difficulties of bargaining. The narrator is Julia Query, a dancer and stand-up comedian who is reluctant to tell her mother, a physician who works with prostitutes, that she strips.”

What was 'Northern Ireland' for? That is a question which has never been considered. This book considers what was established in Northern Ireland and why. The why is important. It had—and continues to have—to do with the handling of the bit of Ireland which broke with the Imperial State: an Ireland which had to cope with seeing a national minority misgoverned across the Border.

In October 2011 Irish Republicans in six European countries organised the first International Day of Action for Irish Republican Prisoners of War. The situation of the protesting prisoners in Maghaberry has worsened in the previous months. Hence Irish Republicans set up the independent International Coordination Committee “Support the POWs!” to hold the second International Day of Action for Irish Republican POWs.

This year, on Saturday 27th October, the International Day of Action will be organised as a worldwide day of action with events in Sydney, New York City and various European cities such as Rome, Vienna, London, Utrecht, Paris, Darmstadt and Hamburg.

One can only look on in amazement as sections of the Irish Socialist movement self-destruct over its attitude to one individual, independent TD Mick Wallace. As with many other things, the appearance is not the reality. The frantic denunciation of Wallace, and the equally frantic adulation of him only a few months ago, represent very deep and systemic weaknesses that must be overcome if a working class resistance is to be built. read full story / add a comment

Friday October 5th marked the 35th anniversary of the murder of the great socialist republican leader, Séamus Costello. The Wicklow man was shot to death on Dublin’s North Strand by counter-revolutionary elements.

On Saturday October 6th a number of events were held in Dublin and Wicklow to remember Costello and pay tribute to his selfless sacrifice and service to Ireland and the working class.

At 11am up to 40 people gathered in Dublin’s north inner city at a new plaque erected in honour of Costello, near the spot where he was murdered on the North Strand Road. The plaque is one of a number recently erected by the Séamus Costello Memorial Committee. read full story / add a comment
