Distinguished NZer opens door for establishment to debate ethical human rights and rights omissions.
international / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Sunday May 20, 2012 09:53 by Anthony Ravlich 34 comments (last - friday june 01, 2012 19:34)
An ethical approach to human rights, development and globalization to replace neo liberalism has support from a distinguished New Zealander which could open the door to its debate by the establishment which has always steadfastly refused to discuss the many human rights omissions from NZ's human rights law. The ethical approach requires that all have, at the very least, the core minimums of the rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights i.e. both 'survival rights' and 'self-help rights' sufficient to enable the individual to reach his/her full potential while also exercising a duty to the community. It emphasizes a 'bottom-up' approach to development to take society forward which promises to considerably reduce unemployment. The ethical approach is now attracting some high profile attention on the internet social networks. read full story / add a comment

Resistance to the Israeli Occupation –nonviolent solidarity among Palestinians and Israelis. What has been happening, why, what have activists been doing -analysis and update from Palestine and the Global March on Jerusalem. Maxine Kaufmann-Lacousta: Canadian and Israeli, activist and writer, Maxine has been involved in activism for justice in Palestine and Israel, either part-time or fulltime most of her life. She has visited the area regularly for extended periods since the 60’s and lived in Jerusalem in the 80’s and 90’s, working with the Alternative Information Center. She saw the error of Zionism after her first visit to Israel as a teenager with a Zionist youth organization in 1960. She was instrumental in bringing about international support for the Jahalin Bedouin, fighting their cause in the courts and practically by staying with them, as protector and witness to threats from Israeli bulldozers. read full story / add a comment

As a simple fisherman I was forced to leave England because our fishing industry was destroyed by the European Union and to come to your lovely country to find work. I am hoping to help out on a campaign to save Ireland's Fish and to point out the hard lessons your English brothers learned and which may be of some small assistance to Irish fishermen. read full story / add a comment

Deprived of signs and art materials, the good people of Occupy Galway came into possession of some chalk. Chalk of every colour is used by children in towns and villages across the country every day to draw the likes of hopscotch boards, noughts and crosses or just idly scribble away a sunny afternoon. It is also used by buskers in cities around the world, who draw fabulous pictures for passers-by to enjoy. One of the joys of chalk that is appreciated by Occupiers is that it causes no damage and is efficiently removed by mother nature in our frequent downpours. It was in this spirit that we began to decorate the grey stone substation that was the back wall of our office before the destruction of the camp. Familiar slogans like “No To Austerity” and “IMF OUT” as well as more pertinent messages like “Constitutional Rights and Due Process R.I.P. Oct. 15-May 16”, began to appear. The grey and featureless substation soon became a monument to freedom of expression, as the many participants joined in the decoration. read full story / add a comment

Friends at any cost: Israel is happy to welcome an Anti-Semite and nazi sympathiser to Israel.Tony Greenstein looks at whats going on here. Full text at link. That the Lithuanian government should commemorate the memory of its quisling Prime Minister is not surprising. That the same anti-Semites who laud the Lithuanian Waffen SS survivors are also pro-Zionist is also not surprising. But that Israel's Foreign Minister, the arch-racist Avigdor Lieberman, should hosts a ministerial welcome to Lithuania's Foreign Minister, a man who tried to prevent the restoration of stolen property to its Jewish owners, should shock even a few Zionists. read full story / add a comment

The Irish educational system is currently failing to provide equal chance, equal access and share to graduate employment opportunities with global employers in Ireland. There seems to be a cultural over-reliance on the English language in Irish society, a lack of awareness importance of being multi-lingual at an early age and language learning time in the classroom is spent on compulsory Irish. read full story / add a comment

Another day, another provocation. Yes, the US led GCC is carrying out War Games around disputed Isles in the Persian Gulf, Isles first seized by the Shah in 1971. Funnily enough the US had no objections to that. Yassamine Mather writes on this and May Day demonstrations in Iran. Full text at link. However, then came news of another conflict in the Persian Gulf - this time between Iran on the one side and Saudi Arabia and Gulf Cooperation Council countries on the other. Arab and US media reported that the Peninsula Shield Force, the military coordinating army of the GCC, had been carrying out military manoeuvres to “test harmony and coordination among ground, air and naval forces and their readiness”. read full story / add a comment
