Latest on battle against live hare coursing in Ireland

category national | environment | opinion/analysis author Tuesday October 11, 2011 02:33author by Ending Hare Coursing Cruelty Report this post to the editors

The cruelty of live hare coursing is well documented, but the infighting among coursing clubs also provides an insight into evil nature of this bloodsport. The Greyhound Nuts site, which is leading online website representing the so-called "sporting doggie business" in Ireland, offers an another gripping instalment on the ongoing saga of the horror story that is our "Greyhound Industry"...

A most revealing insight into the dark underbelly of the hare coursing "industry" in Ireland. Fans of the "sport" of setting up hares as live bait are tearing EACH OTHER apart for a change in recent days...Here's the latest:

WHEN WILL IT EVER END?

It has been brought to my attention that a temporary injunction has been granted to Pat Curtin today preventing the ICC from awarding the Irish Cup prize money to the owners of Wilton Time or allowing them to advertise him as the legitimate winner.I am also led to believe that a reporter was seen leaving the high court shortly afterwards so it looks like more bad publicity for coursing will hit the media. It's now time clubs stood up and were counted as these shenanigans are doing more damage to our sport than anything the antis could ever come up with. One of the owners of Wilton Time has already passed away and Micheal Kelleher Snr the remaining owner who has spend so much money on coursing dogs over the years is like all of us not getting any younger and I don't mean this in any disrespectful way. This man should be allowed to celebrate the greatest day of his coursing life after all he has put into the game. The Kellehers Michael Snr , Michael Jnr and Don are great coursing people who abide by the rules and can take their beating whenever it comes around and the sooner we stop the blackguarding that is being done to people like this the sooner we can call ourselves true sportsmen. Club secretaries please take note that this action has already cost the ICC over e150,000.

Just seems absolutely ridiculous how long this situation has been allowed to run. They do say the law is an ass and this continuing nonsense does justice to that statement. As you say John this carry on is doing absolutely no good for the sport of coursing.

We need to show a bit of solidarity with the people who abided by the rules and this has gone on long enough. The dog is old now and if this goes back the court route again as it seems to be the intention then he will be dead before it is resolved. I have been coursing for nearly 50 years and I have never seen such unsporting behaviour like this in all my years. The dog tested positive for amphetamines and of that there is no doubt. Michael Kelleher who is all his life coursing doesn't deserve to be treated so shabbily by a guy who is only here training coursing dogs in this country for a little over a decade. It's not as though it was the first or last time he used banned substances on a dog. IMO Owners should tell this man to stop this shameful action or suffer the consequences.

Agree 100% that the whole affair is a shambles but would it be fair to an owner who has dogs in this kennel to refuse them entry to a meeting, "sins of the father" and all that,

I know it is asking a lot as loyaltY might come into it but IMO the owners in this kennel should get together for the good of our sport tell this man that unless he drops his planned course of action that they will be looking elsewhere for a trainer. This might be what is needed to make him see sense and not to be making a mockery of the decision of our ICC executive . All he is doing is delaying the inevitable but perhaps that is the plan so that he can continue on training greyhounds.

The only way for sure to know what dogs any trainer has is for the secretary accepting entries to ask the person entering'' who is training your dog''. If somebody lies and is caught out then the word will spread through the grapevine and they won't get away with it again.

why would any owner have dogs with a trainer who is a convicted repeated cheat? its scum like him that need to be taken out of the game for the integrity and future of the sport.

Doesn't surprise me in the least...that first picture though shows HARE COURSING fans attacking protesters at Cashel. The protesters are not visible in the photo apart from that placard on the far left. This has been a long campaign...

The Irish Hare is endangered, apart altogether from what the coursing clubs are doing to it. It's time for some brave TD or Senator to follow in the footsteps of the late great Tony Gregory and bring in a Private Members Bill to ban this SICK practise.
