Additional Information: EUMETSAT isEurope’s meteorological satellite organisation. It operates an array of geostationary and polar-orbiting weather satellites that provide images and quantitative data to weather forecast centres all overEuropeand the rest of the world. Inspired by the earlyU.S.satellites, the meteorological services ofEuropebrought EUMETSAT into being in 1986. The story of its conception, modest beginnings and its growing success over the years is the subject of the Irish Meteorological Society’s talk on 25 April, 2013. Declan Murphy was Director of Met Éireann from 1989 to 2009. He served as Chairman of the Council of EUMETSAT from 2004 to 2008. He is the author of the history of EUMETSAT - “EUMETSAT 25 Years” – published on the organisation’s 25th anniversary in July 2011.
