We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Tear The Fence Down (a poem about love)

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday February 28, 2003 17:58author by Rab Fulton Report this post to the editors

Dear Friends as one of the original signatories to the irish Writers Against War letter to the Irish Times, I felt it was important to state what my views are vis-a-vis non violent direct action against the war. I completely support the tearing down of fences, and the decommissioning of aircraft carrying American troops. Hopefully my little poem will explain why. I'll be at Shannon tomorrow. Hope to see you all there. Cheers Rab Swannock Fulton

Tear The Fence Down (a poem about love)

When the hammers chisels pickaxes
Broke the Berlin wall apart
Who dared say hate filled extremism
Filled every protesters heart.
Who could condemn
Such acts of joy and celebration,
Who dares condemn
Such acts of love and peaceful liberation

When after three hundred years
Scotland’s parliament was reconvened,
Who dared condemn the d-locks, saws
Tunnels, blockades that realised the dream.
Who could condemn
Such acts of joy and celebration,
Who dares condemn
Such acts of love and peaceful liberation

And now Britain and America
Plan the massive racist slaughter
For oil of untold numbers of
Iraq’s sons and daughters,
Its time to take a stand
Agin war criminals and their clowns,
Time to get to Shannon airport
And tear its hateful fence down.
And who will condemn
Such an act of joy and celebration,
Who dare condemn
Such an act of love and peaceful liberation.

They love to name the revolution in the red titles of their weekly papers, but as they find themselves facing a bit of pressure from
reformist trade union leaders and NGO bureaucrats, the mainstream media or the power that be they start to panic. And they forget that in the long run their attack on the grassroots is mainly going to damage to their own credibility. It's just political immaturity, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Hopefully they will grow up.

As Dan Berrigan said in praise of Mary Kelly's symbolic destruction of the U.S war machine: Its an act of justice and compassion. Aherne, by allowing the U.S. war machine use Shannon, is complicit in the impending mass murder of 1,000s of Iraqi civilians, yet its those who plan to pull down a fence are condemned as violent. And Bush is waging war for peace.

there is a planet though.
with 40.1 trillion dollars a year GDP.
and over 6.5 billion people.
they are worth saving.
no borders. could easliy begin with what would be "iraq" after Saddam. Because there really is no "iraq" just as there is no USA. they are artificial constructions.
