The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

PSNI pigs wield batons at wee kids, and set dogs on children

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday March 20, 2003 23:26author by peeler watcher Report this post to the editors

Big brave armed PSNI pigs set their dogs on wee kids protesting outside the American embassy on Queen st. WHAT NEXT PLASTIC BULLETS maybe?

Wee kids protesting against the war, found trigger happy armed PSNI bully pigs itching to wield their batons and use their pig dogs today in Belfast. The daughter of a popular newsreader found herself spokesperson for Belfast children protesting against the war, as the 12 yr old led the protestors round to Queen st, the children were confronted by a barrier of fully armed riot squad peelers. 5 scrawny school boys were arrested at the protest. Maybe Nuala O loan would like to investigate this one.

Rough manhandling of wee kids, seems to come very easy to our brave armed PSNI peelers. PSNI peelers must think they're at home, throwing their own kids about, or David Beattie. It seems child abuse is just another vice to add to the list of peeler traits.

Peelers must think they live in Soweto, and can swat school kids like flies.

Not propaganda for the hundreds of schoolstudents that were there but very real

School children, from Methodist college, Inst, Royal academy, St Malachis, St Louises, St Patricks, Little flower, Aquinas, Wellington College, Boy's Model, Girls model and many more schools attended the rally. The demo recieved widespread cross community support, and the treatment dished out to all school children by the RUC was the same for all, rough regardless of school religion. Thanx to all the brave little children who took part and to the tiny arrestees.

After a uniformed student was arrested, his colleagues asked one of the officers involved what was the reason for the arrest. I saw some harsh words being exchanged.

When I asked one of the students what the officer had said, he replied, 'he said, "I'll arrest you too if you don't watch yourselves. Where are you from? You're from the West, aren't you?"'. The student was pretty disgusted at that. We are talking about maybe a 13 or 14 year old here.

Perhaps someone reading this can explain to me what the officer may have meant by "You're from the West, aren't you?"

I associate the West of the city with the minority part of the population, but the newly branded PSNI is an open and impartial institution which protects the liberty of every member of the public in equal measure according to the law of the United Kingdom.

No law makes special reference to persons from West Belfast.

What am I missing?

The kids energy was really inspiring yesterday. A lot of negative people were saying that they were using it as an excuse to get off school but when you spoke to the kids and saw the passion with which they were shouting it was evident that it was more than just a day off school. If it had merely been an excuse for them to skip school they would not have still have been outside Belfast City Hall at 4.30 - over 4 hours after they walked out of school. These kids were there because they wanted to be. They stood up to everyone. they are standing up to the police, the politicians, teachers and the older people at the march. When older SWP members tried to tried to dissolve the protest for fear of anoying the police or blocking the highway the kids shouted "we will not be moved". Fuckin right.

Particularly impressive were the ones who took the opportunity with the microphone and voiced what many older people were saying and did in simple bold terms.

By the time the rest of us were getting jaded and tired the kids just kept on going and inspired the rest of us - their enthusiasm and drive is an example for us all.

I think a lot more kids will be motivated by yesterday protest - they will be spurred on to come back again and again and they realised that they do have a voice. They will tell their friends, and they will tell their friends. It can only be a good thing.

The behaviour of certain police officers was shameful yesterday. Some of the kids were aksing legitimate questions regarding what exact laws were being broken etc and the police were speechless - veryu often their only response was along the lines of "listen just move on" or "You've been told twice, I'm not telling you again". Fuckin jobsworths.
