The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

‘Learscail bhoithre' na Palaistine lan castai is cor

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday April 23, 2003 01:20author by NææUA Report this post to the editors

De réir ‘léarscáil bhóithre’ na síochána sa Mheánoirthear, beidh réiteach ar fhulaingt na bPalaistíneach le theacht na bliana 2005. Tá an plean, a foilsíodh gan cead SAM, an tseachtain seo, scartha ina trí rannóg: 1. Deireadh leis an fhoréigean, tarraingt siar na nIosraelach; 2. Stát sealadach Palaistíneach; 3. Cainteanna faoi thodhchaí Iarúsailéim, dídeanaithe agus lonnaíochtaí.

Ach tá Iosrael cheana féin ar lorg 15 athrú ar an phlean lena chinntiú nach ndéanfar ionsaithe air amach anseo.

Creideann na Palaistínigh nach bhfuil an stát Giúdach ach ag iarraidh an plean a scriosadh.

Ag deireadh na seachtaine seo caite, dúirt Príomhaire Iosrael, Ariel Sharon, go mbeadh sé sásta roinnt de na lonnaíochtaí ar an Bhruach Thiar a bhaint as a chéile mar chuid den réiteach deiridh.

Agus é ag caint ar áiteanna ar nós Shiloh agus Beit El, mhaígh an Príomhaire go mbeadh ar Iosrael iad a thabhairt ar ais don Phalaistín.

Tá sé de chlú ar Sharon go bhfuil sé i gcoinne na síochána agus tá Palaistínigh agus Iosraelaigh liobrálacha araon ar aon intinn gurb é aidhm Sharon an Comhaontú a rinneadh in Osló a scriosadh.

Ainneoin chaint Sharon ar ghéilleadh ag deireadh na seachtaine, tá Iosrael cheana ag leagan síos coinníollacha roimh chainteanna.

Deir na hIosraelaigh nach nglacfaidh siad páirt i gcainteanna síochána go dtí go mbeidh stop leis na buamaí féinbháis.

Agus tá géarchéim na ndídeanaithe chun a bheith ina bac.

Tá 3.9 milliún Palaistíneach ina ndídeanaithe. Cuireadh amach as Iosrael iad agus deir Sharon nach mbeidh ceart fillte ar a seanbhailte acu.

Tá 15 pointe déanta ag Iosrael i gcoinne an phlean nua.

Tá na Palaistínigh anois ag brath ar dhea-thoil SAM le brú a chur ar Iosrael tarraingt siar agus páirt ghníomhach a ghlacadh i bpróiseas síochána.

Ach tá Washngton ag diúltú labhairt faoin phlean. Deir siad nach fiú trácht ar an

‘Léarscáil Bhóithre’ fós toisc nach bhfuil sí foilsithe go hoifigiúil.

Tá siad ag rá nach bhfoilseofar í go dtí go mbeidh rialtas nua ceaptha ag Príomhaire nua na Palaistíne, Mahmoud Abbas.

Tá Fatah, grúpa Yassar Arafat, ag cur i gcoinne roinnt de na ceapacháin atá á lorg ag an Uasal Abbas.

Bhí dóchas aige go mbeadh baill uile an rialtais úir in áit aige an tseachtain seo ach tá an cinneadh deireanach curtha siar.

Tá an gheallúint do na Palaistínigh mar chuid de straitéis cairéad-agus-slat – seo bronntanas don domhan Arabach ar acht nach dtabharfar tacaíocht d’eadarnaithe frith-iartharacha ná frith-Iosraelacha.

Ainneoin an dóchas atá ag ceannairí Palaistíneacha go bhfuil rialtas George Bush ag meas fadhbanna s’acu, tá Washington ag díriú ar an tSiria.

Cé go bhfuil an teorainn idir Iosrael agus an tSiria ciúin ó bhí 2000 ann, maireann an teannas idir an dá stát i gcónaí.

Sa bhliain 2000, tharraing Iosrael amach as an Liobáin ach tá trúpaí na Siria ann fós.
Cuireann Iosrael i leith a comharsan Arabaí go mbíonn sí ag tabhairt tacaíochta don grúpa míleata, Hamas, agus go bhfuil ceanncheathrú Hizbullah sa Damaisc.

Deir SAM nach ligfidh sé don tSiria dídean a sholáthar do na ceannarí Iarácacha atá ar a dteitheadh.

Ach tar éis seachtain fhada taidhleoireachta ag Uachtarán na Siria, Bashar Assad, mhaolaigh SAM ar an bhagairt ar Shiria nuair a dúirt an Rúnaí Stáit, Colin Powell, nach raibh plean ann túr ar bith eile a ionsaí.

don té ar féidir leis "is cuma liom" a rá. Dá mbeifeá ina chónaí faoi chois na hIosraelach ní bheadh an deis sin agat.
