The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

DEMO Shelbourne Hotel 6th May

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday April 30, 2003 20:11author by IPSC - Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaignauthor email supportpalestine at ireland dot comauthor address PO Box 9124, Dublin 1author phone 01 6770253 Report this post to the editors

Israeli Independence Day Celebration

On Wednesday 6th May at 7.00pm, the Israeli ambassador will be hosting a reception in the Shelbourne Hotel to mark Israel's Independence Day. Meanwhile, the Israeli army is engaged in a brutal occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, where the Palestinian people are denied their independence. We ask you to protest at this celebration by Israeli Ambassador and his guests which is being held while human rights are abused every day in Palestine. Bring placards, flags and banners! You can also complain to the Shelbourne Hotel on 01 6634500. Wed. 6 May 7.00pm, outside Shelbourne Hotel, St. Stephens Green.

If you used the link to Protest.net provided in the left-hand column you wouldn't have made this error. There is no Wed May 6th 2003. There _is_ a Wed May 7th though and YOURS could be the first event advertised on it, leaving the newswire free for news:

R Isible, you have tech/editor level access, can you please drop me an email personally please?

The number of responses to my request for a one on one tutorial to learn how to featurise and edit was zero.

Also it is a good idea encouraging people to use protest.net calendar but they wont unless there is a link on the front page, which i think we should do. Check out vancouver IMC for how they do it, on the right hand above the newswire.

notice that no one uses it

http://www.protest.net/indyirl/calendrome.cgi?span=week&day=7&month=May&year=2003&list=&state_values=

and often the site is down or spammed with useless info - unless someone is going to regularly unspam it, it will be worse than useless.

the place for announcemenst is on the newswire and activists shouldn't be harassed by R Isible

Apologies for the confusion. The protest is taking place on Tuesday 6th May.

The newswire is for NEWS, such as the reports of what activists (people that _do_ things) have actually _done_.

There are many good examples if you look down the newswire where people report on what they and others have _done_.

The problem with allowing announcements from every Tom, Dick and Harry onto the newswire is that those pieces of news disappear off the newswire. Things like T.Hourigan's latest report from Shannon, the results of the Shannon _activist_ trials etc.

Furthermore, your _own_ announcement will disappear quickly off the newswire a long time before May 6th if there were not a policy of editing for truth, uniqueness and originality.

Note that I have NOT deleted announcements. I'm requesting those that are posting those announcements to use the provided alternate mechanism for all of our convenience.

The argument that no one uses protest.net and therefore that no one should use it is strange. All the other lemmings are jumping off the cliff so why shouldn't you?

The idea is to get this stuff off the wire! So the argument that no-one uses it is a bit circular - it would be bad form of any IMC editor to hide an event announcement when there is no traffic to the protest.net section. (Spam problems, we can work on). If there are no notices there there will be no traffic. So the point of putting notes on event announcements at the moment is to encourage the use of the calendar - ultimately it will become the natural thing to do (hopefully a clearer link will be added in the coming days) and then it would be fair to un-clog the wire of event announcements. For the life of me I can't figure out why adding a suggestion of any sort to an article is a problem - surely it's not being suggested that we should delete without explaining?

This protest will not condemn the murderous suicide bombings carried out by Palestinians. Neither will it condemn the attempts to drive settlers out of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
