Grassroots mobilisation from Dublin to Shannon

The Grassroots Gathering in Galway last weekend resolved to travel to Shannon for the blockade on December 6th. We encourage all anti war demonstrators to travel to Shannon to maintain the pressure on the Irish Government, who have continually ignored the wishes of the people by supporting warplanes and troops passing through Shannon Airport.

As anti war demonstrators we do not wish to stand idly by while the State is complicit in terror and killing through logistical support. Over 90,000 US troops have passed through Shannon this year alone, 10,000 of them in September, long after the war was supposed to be over. The deal with the American Government may have brought money into the pockets of Aer Rianta - but at what price? What is the financial worth of one innocent life? Does our Government put a value on the lives of civilians in Afghanistan & Iraq?

The Dublin Grassroots Network Against War is organising a bus for the trip down to Shannon on December 6th. It costs 10 euros per person for the return trip. We will be leaving at 9am from outside Liberty Hall.

The bus is scheduled to leave at 6pm from Shannon but this is not set in stone. The bus will leave whenever there is consensus from the group travelling that we are ready to go back to Dublin. Everybody will have a say in deciding when the group packs up to leave.

We encourage all grassroots anti war activists, non-authoritarian anti-capitalists, anarchists, ecologists, and other individuals who are interested in a non-hierarchical, direct action demo to come and travel with us.

The bus will also act as a venue for debate and discussion about tactics and strategy on the day itself. Nobody will be told what to do. We can each choose to take part in the protest on a level that we are comfortable with.

In the run-up to the protest, local groups connected to the grassroots gathering will be meeting up around the country to plan our tactics and decision making structures for the day itself. If you would like to get involved in this planning, get in touch by phone or email and we'll let you know about the meetings.

Tickets are available now for only 10 euros each per person - please contact 086 177 0439 or email ggantiwar@yahoo.com for more information.

See you on the bus. Shut down Shannon warport. And let's bring our own megaphones! We shall not be led!

That it is important that people book tickets as soon as possible. Even if your not sure you are going get a ticket, if nothing else it can be a donation to the costs.

The main reason you should get you ticket soon is so that you are included in a meeting early next week which will discuss tactics and mandate a Dublin delegate for an island wide GNAW delegate meeting to take place next weekend. The will decide our basic plan for the day so if you want an input get your ticket SOON.

For tickers please contact 086 177 0439 or email ggantiwar@yahoo.com

I hope the bus actually looks like the one in the picture! We can use it for the blockade perhaps?

For those who are interested in travelling down on the Dublin bus, we should be having local meetings in the near future (check the Indymedia events section) to discuss ideas and possible tactics. We are basically answering to the call for a blockade announced on http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=61845 and we want the action to be as successful as possible.

For those who are interested in getting involved, we have a couple of discussion lists:
There is gg-antiwar@yahoogroups.com at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/gg-antiwar
This is a general discussion list for those who are interested in the anti-war activity of those who attend the Grassroots Gatherings.
There is also the gnaw-internal list at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/gnaw-internal for people active in GNAW to have more detailed and in-depth discussion.
Finally, if you're not interested in discussing and planning, you can subscribe to gnaw-announce at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gnaw-announce/ to get announcements of what our plans are.

Personally, I don't see any immediate benefits arising from the blocakade but I think it's important that we resist the Irish government's participation in US imperialism. Mass actions in general and this blockade in particular should make the decision to militiarise Shannon that bit more difficult. I would see December's action as just one step in a long-term campaign of resistance.

The blockade has to be the beginning of a long haul campaign and will have to be followed up with bigger and better blockades until access is denied to the Yanks. Let's turn Shannon airport into an Irish Faslane!

As we've said before, the bus return time is not set in stone.

A couple of people have asked about getting home in time to Dublin to get regional buses back to places like Drogheda, Ashbourne, etc. If we dont get back until later on and people have missed their last bus home, accomodation will be provided for them. More details about this will be available on the day on the bus, or else ring the contact number (leave a message if no answer)

And there will be at least one car down there with the specific purpose of waiting for anybody who might have got inadvertently delayed down in Shannon. I don't think anybody wants to hang out all evening down in Shannon just for the sake of it!

Get your ass down to Bodkins to support the bus!
