Cardinal Daly on Tax Evasion and the Banks

category national | miscellaneous | opinion/analysis author Tuesday August 24, 2004 12:35author by Michael Hennigan Report this post to the editors

"one of the great scandals in modern Ireland".

The Irish Times reports that in his new book The Minding of Planet Earth, Cardinal Cahal Daly attacks systematic tax evasion by some of the State's wealthiest citizens and "to add to the shame," he said, "banks and financial institutions have been complicit in facilitating this scandalous practice."

These are laudable views but what is interesting about the parallel scandals of our times, in both religious and corporate organisations, is how similar the behavior was of those who turned a blind eye to the wrongdoing: protect the brand at all costs and the self-interest of those in senior positions. The arrogance of power was another common trait.

I recall when Cardinal Daly received his copy of a report on child abuse by priests, he did not question the failure of leadership of any of his colleague bishops.

It did strike me also when listening to a bishop on RTE Radio talking of his plans to attend the Anti-Iraq War march in Feb 2003, that while it was good to hear of a bishop showing moral leadership but such a choice is cost free compared with calling colleagues to account.

Priest sex abuse an 'industrial accident', says bishop

20 August 2004

AMSTERDAM — The Dutch Catholic Church has gone to court to force
insurer Aegon to reimburse a damages pay-out to a girl who was
sexually abused by a priest. The Bishop of Rotterdam claims the
abuse was an industrial accident and was covered by the Church's
liability insurance, it was reported Friday.

The Church's legal action against the insurance company began with a
preliminary hearing behind closed doors in a court in The Hague on
Wednesday, newspaper De Telegraaf reported. Is it expected the court
will hear the case in full within the next six weeks.

The girl was six when she was abused by the priest in Rotterdam. She
took a claim against the diocese and in February 2000 she was
awarded NLG 100,000 (EUR 45,000) compensation. The priest was
prosecuted for the sexual abuse.

Rotterdam diocese wants Aegon to reimburse it with EUR 58,000 to
cover the full cost of dealing with the case because it claims the
abuse should formally be seen as an industrial accident.

To support its claim, it argues the abuse was committed by a
clergyman during work hours and in his work place, his local parish.
It further argues that there is a risk that a priest performing his
pastoral work may carry out such an attack.

funny this cos instead of the insurance company paying out in this country the public is paying the compo

Industrial accident me arse. I suppose they also want the insurance company to compensate the priest for "pain and suffering" and "stress" etc.
Neither the insurance company nor the public should have to pay anything. The catholic church should be forced to melt down some of it's gold to pay.

His Grace seems to think we are being indulgent decadent a sinful for spending our well earned cash on SUV's.
I own a shiny Mercedes 4X4 with bull bars and super charged turbo diesel and i like nothing better than to play pounding dance music on my massive stereo while i cruise to the corner shop and back.
One day I'll take it off road (on a pilgrimage to Lough Derg but i might damage the paint work!).

The Pope like to drive around in a big white LandRover doesn't he?
Deenadenadenadena- To the POPEMOBILE!

When i feel remorseful maybe I'll buy one of those huge armoured Zil limousine the egalitarian Kremlin elite drove about in.

Bush at least is honest - he drives around in that hunky Cadillac because he looks COOL.
Barbara stuck her tongue out cause she was feeling DECADENT.

When i feel remorse maybe I'll by one of those wonderful Ladas the Communists wheeled out of those godawful factories outside Bucharest not to long ago.

I'm an atheist myself but it's about time a religious person (claiming to be a moral authority) spoke up about stuff like this. Particularly tax evasion.

Seeing rich housewives driving down the road to the shops in their SUVs is just surreal.
