Chomsky Salutes Raytheon 9 !

leading american academic and anarchist salutes Derry protesters

Leading American academic, Noam Chomsky, whose prolific writing and lectures cover US foreign and domestic policy, the Military-Industrial complex, the State of Israel and the Middle East crises, today congratulated the protesters who disarmed Raytheon, describing the action as 'inspiring', and the people who did it as 'wonderful'.

In an email response to a member of Anti War Ireland who had asked him what he thought of the news, he wrote :

"Wonderful people. Very glad to hear it. Even the very slight association I had with Irish resistance was really inspiring for me"

Chomsky, once a Young Zionist, is now a fierce critic of US foreign policy and the actions of the State of Israel.

Chomsky's support is hardly a surprise but great to hear nonetheless! He understands the need for diversity of tactics. Always has, and he understands the role of non-violent direct action in political struggle.

Solidarity greetings to the Raytheon Nine, especially to the man left inside!

Chomsky's support is no surprise but nevertheless it's great to hear it.

I just want to express my solidarity to the Raytheon 9. Very brave action, especially in the context of the type of 'justice' system they are facing across the border.

Shameful lack of mainstream media coverage of the action here. As the standoff was happening it was very difficult to get any information about what was going on. Most activists were reliant on texts and e-mails from people, and of course on Indymedia. Thanks to those who kept everyone informed.

The Derry 9 are an inspiration! Here in the U$, back in the 60s, it used to be called trashing. I think we need much more trashing of corporate and government property. The capitalists and militarists are destroying people in their wars, repressing resistance, and stealing the world's wealth, concentrating it to smaller elites. Let a thousand Derrys spread around the globe!

What's exciting about Ireland today (looking in from the outside) is the apparent willingness of different styles of peace activist to forgive and tolerate each other, thus making space for both radical and mainstream contributions.

Of course Chomsky is widely attacked and discredited by many forces - in the same way that Martin Luther King was, that Kathy Kelly is, and that any activists who makes a strong stand will be.

Our job is to keep thinking for ourselves - to NOT get caught up in silly "you're not perfect so I can ignore you" games, and continue to build a vibrant and active culture of peace-making.

Congratulations Derry 9. Good job. Appropriate target. Great courage.

Noam Chomsky offering support to the nine men, five of them supporters of Republican terrorism.
The world has finally gone mad.
