Camp Havana

category donegal | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Monday September 04, 2006 20:22author by Eleanor Lanigan - Free the Miami 5 Campaignauthor email freemiami5 at eircom dot net Report this post to the editors

15th to the 17th September we have an annual event in Donegal called Camp Havana. We have an organised cllimb of Glencolmbcille in order to raise funds for the Miami 5 Campaign

CAMP HAVANA 2006

****************

Glencolmcille, Co. Donegal, Ireland, Friday 15 to Sunday 17 September, 2006

Following the success of last year's Camp Havana in Glencolumbcille, Co Donegal, Free the Miami Five and the Camp Havana Organising Committee are repeating the event. This year it will form part of a coordinated global solidarity event aimed at focusing media attention onto the plight of the Miami Five - five Cuban political prisoners held in the USA. By September 2006 the Five will have spent 8 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.

From Friday 15th to Sunday 17th September 2006 over 100 men, women and children from every corner of this island - and indeed from much further away - will gather in Glencolmcille / Donegal. They will come in busses, by car, bicycle or on foot. They will erect CAMP HAVANA and walk the hills surrounding the valley of Glencolumbcille. Some will take the challenging hike across the Slieve League ridge, accompanied by a trained mountain guide. Some will use a more relaxed walking route and some will only go as far as the bus can take them. Some may even attempt to dance salsa!

All of them will enjoy Europe's highest sea - cliffs which are surrounded by scenery incomparable to anywhere else on this earth (see http://marette.free.fr/panorama_irlande/panorama1.html). Of course we are not just gathering to admire spectacular scenery. We will get together in what is going to be the biggest show of friendship with people from another island, - at least since last year’s Camp Havana.

We are making this effort mainly because five young men are serving lengthy prison sentences in the USA, guilty of nothing but the attempt to stop terrorism; murderous and destructive acts which have killed over 3,500 civilians in Cuba - more than the troubles in northern Ireland.

These peaceful men went to Miami to infiltrate the terrorist groups who orchestrate this violence so as to be able to warn the Cuban authorities to take action to protect life and limb. They ended up in US prisons, framed on trumped-up charges. They have spent months in isolation cells; their wives, children and relations have been denied visits. They have been subjected to treatment characterised as "torture" by Amnesty International whilst in US custody.

We want freedom for these innocent men!

With our sponsored mountain walk and the gathering on the evening of Saturday September 16th we will achieve;

- Massive publicity and increased awareness about the case.

- Pressure on political representatives (TDs, MPs, MEPs) to act as opposed to talk.

- Raising of much needed financial support for the campaign and for the Cuban Health and Education project in Cuba

- A major contribution to the global week of action in support of the Miami Five and strengthen the links between campaigners from various countries

We can and we will free the Miami Five! Nobody in this world is going to do it for us! Lend us your support! Join Camp Havana Glencolmcille 2006!
